His full name is Konstantin Alexander Payne. He was born on February 10, 1961 in Omaha, Nebraska. After high school he entered Stanford University, where he studied Spanish history and literature. Then he studied at the famous film school at the University of California. Filmed by him in his student years, the hour-long film "Martin's Passion" caused approval from specialists and was shown at the famous Sundance Film Festival. In addition, the film helped him get a job as a screenwriter at Universal Pictures. However, after a while, work in Universal ceased to suit him, and in 1996 he directed his first feature film, Citizen Ruth, a satirical comedy starring actress Laura Dern. This film did not gain wide recognition, but at the same time it was quite well received at film festivals, and critics praised the director for his unconventional humor in depicting social problems. The script of the picture was written by Payne himself in co-authorship with his friend Jim Taylor, who subsequently always took part in the work on his films.
The next picture of Payne is the youth comedy Upstart (1999), in which the main roles were played by Reese Witherspoon and Matthew Broderick, was much more successful and brought him and Taylor an Oscar nomination for best screenplay. Based on a novel by Tom Perrotta, the film, based on the school history of the college presidential election, to a certain extent veiled the American political system. Later, Payne as part of a group of writers worked on the creation of the film “Jurassic Park III” (2001, dir. Joe Johnston), and in 2002 he returned with another comedy “About Schmidt” with the participation of the famous Jack Nicholson, in which the famous actor played an old man who lost after the resignation and death of his wife any interest in life. Despite the overall comedic nature of the film, it also touched on more serious, psychological problems of loneliness and relationships between people. Similar more restrained and more personal intonations were distinguished by Payne's next picture "On the Roadside" (2004), a kind of road story that happened with two friends-losers during a trip to California. After the release of the film on the screens, critics not only noted the brilliant acting duet of Paul Giamatti and Thomas Hayden Church, but also the magnificent script for which Payne and his partner Taylor were awarded many awards, including the Oscar, Golden Globe and the British Academy of Film and Television. Payne is also engaged in production work, and in 2006 he directed the short film "The Fourteenth District", included in the almanacs "Paris, I Love You."
