British director, screenwriter and producer Gurinder Chadha was born in 1960 in Kenya. Her parents were Indian, but had British citizenship. Growing up in an Indian family, Gurinder nevertheless did not try to follow the traditions adopted in this environment and persistently sought her way of life, absorbing both Asian and English culture of the inhabitants of the city. After graduating from school, Chadha entered the University of East Anglia, where she studied politics and economics, then worked as a reporter for the BBC news service.
In 1989, Chadha made her debut as a director with the documentary short film "I am British, but...", dedicated to the life of young English Asians, which was created with the assistance of the British Film Institute. The same problem of the clash of two cultures was devoted to her first feature eleven-minute film “Beautiful agreement” (1991), about the wedding by agreement of parents. Following this, Chadha directed her first feature-length film, the feminist comedy about women on vacation "Banji on the beach" (1993), for which she was awarded a special prize "Evening Standard" as the most promising newcomer.
In the future, she directed several more documentaries, as well as a two-part television drama "Rich Liar" (1995) for the TV channel "BBC". Later, Gurinder Chadha worked in the United States, where she directed the comedy What to Prepare? (2000), consisting of several intersecting stories about the preparation for Thanksgiving in American families of different nationalities. Her next film “Play Like Beckham” (2002), featuring actresses Parminder Nagra and Keira Knightley about a young girl from an Indian family who dreams of a career as a professional football player, became the most successful in both creative and commercial terms work. The film collected many awards of various film festivals and was nominated for the Alexander Korda Award of the British Academy of Film and Television and the American Golden Globe Award.
In 2004, another comedy "Bride and Prejudice" was released, in which the main role was played by actress Aishwarya Rai. The title of the film referred to Jane Austen’s famous novel Pride and Prejudice, from which the storyline was borrowed, but the characters were transferred to the present. The following year, she acted as a producer and screenwriter of the film “Princess of Spices” (2005), which was staged by her husband, screenwriter Paul Mayeda Burges, and soon made her short film “The Embankment of the Seine” entered the almanac “Paris, I Love You” (2006), consisting of small sketches about the capital of France directors from different countries. In June 2006, for her creative contribution to cinema, Gurinder Chadha was awarded the title of officer of the Order of the British Empire.
