William Boyd was born on March 7, 1952 in Accra, Ghana. He grew up in Africa, Ghana and Nigeria, where his parents worked as a teacher and doctor. When William was nine years old, he was sent to school in Scotland. He then attended the University of Glasgow and Oxford – Jesus College, where in 1975 he became a Ph.D., defending his thesis on Shelley’s work. He then attended the University of Glasgow and Oxford – Jesus College, where in 1975 he became a Ph.D., defending his thesis on Shelley’s work. Shortly as a television critic for the New Statesman, Boyd began teaching English at St. Hilda’s College in Oxford. William Boyd's first book, A Good Man in Africa, was published in 1981 and immediately won prestigious awards - the Somerset Maugham Prize and the Whitbred Prize for Best Debut Novel, and it was written in just three months. Later on this novel, he wrote the script for the film of the same name, released in 1994. Then followed the novels “The War of Ice Cream” (1982), “Stars and Stripes” (1984), “School Ties” (1985), “New Confessions” (1987), “Brazzaville Beach” (1990), “Blue Noon” (1993), “Battleship” (1998). Almost every book Boyd became an event in English literature and if not awarded literary prizes, it was among the main contenders. So, released in 2002, a new novel by William Boyd – “The Heart of Every Man” – immediately entered the list of nominees for the Booker Prize. In addition, the writer is known as a successful screenwriter - in this capacity he participated in the creation of films "Good and Bad in the Game" (1983), "Dutch Girls" (1985), "Tune in for Tomorrow" (1990), "Mr. Johnson" (1990), "Chaplin" (1992), "Sword of Honor" (2001), "Battleship" (2001).
