Born August 10, 1901 in the city of Sormovo. He studied at the private Sormov real school N.N. Subbotina, and after its closure - in the 2nd Nizhny Novgorod gymnasium in Kanavin. In 1916, after the family moved to Moscow, he entered the 6th Moscow Gymnasium. He studied at the historical and philological faculty of Moscow University. In 1932, the Theatre-Studio was organized under the leadership of N. P. Khmelev (in 1937 he joined the Ermolova Moscow Theatre, N. P. Khmelev was its artistic director until 1945).
People's Artist of the USSR (1937);
Winner of Stalin Prizes (1941, 1942, 1946).
He died on November 1, 1945, during the general rehearsal of the play “Difficult years”.
