Anna / Audrey Hepburn / - the heiress of the European throne, tired of endless official gatherings and escaped from the palace in search of new experiences
Joe (Gregory Peck) is an American newspaper reporter who dreams of earning money to go to his native country.
Irwin (Eddie Albert) – Joe’s friend, a photographer who even has hidden cameras
A movie that few people have ever seen. I think the whole world has seen it and everyone admires it. That is not surprising, because he is really very sweet and relaxing, he gives pleasant impressions and a lot of reasons to smile. Although the ending can make you cry. Well, everyone saw, and I saw only now, although in a distant childhood I watched some passages on TV.
Almost all the viewing I periodically heard in my head the voice of Yuri Yakovlev, saying: “Do you think it is easy for us, the tsars?” In fact, all boron cheese begins because being a princess is not easy. All these official receptions, endless trips, only sounds tempting, but in fact - you are a hostage of certain limits and your own opinion can never be expressed anywhere. Not to mention something – just think! – do it yourself!
So Anna, tired of all that is happening, decides to rebel and escape from the palace. Judging by the reaction of her lady-in-waiting to the girl's tantrums, such tantrums, which Anna arranged before her escape, are not at all out of the ordinary. And this is quickly solved with the help of a sedative injection, which later played a cruel joke with Anna.
The film is the story of one day when the princess was free. When she could do what she wanted, eat what she wanted, walk where she wanted and say what would come to her mind, not what endless advisers had written to her and she had memorized. Meeting with Joe, who at first was very mercantile and really wanted to use luck accidentally flown into his hands for selfish purposes, was another breath of fresh air for the girl, another small adventure, which in the future, apparently, will warm her tired of officialdom and lack of freedom soul.
It is clear why young people are interested in each other. No, everything here is official and noble, the film is not quite about love. But a slight touch of romance only gives a special charm to the picture and some tragedy to its finale. The final scene is very strong, I was impressed. But this ending is actually expected.
In the frame there are sights of Rome, and in general many views of this city. The creators seem to be in love with him. I was very surprised, and, pleasantly, that the role of Irwin here was performed by an actor familiar to me - the main character of one of my favorite retro series "Green Spaces". In the series, he's an old man so gray, and then - wow, and womanizer. Unexpected.
It’s a good movie, if you haven’t seen it yet, I can’t help recommending it. A classic that everyone should be familiar with.
“Never be afraid to follow your heart and do reckless things. Have you forgotten that life is only given once, no matter how banal it may sound? – Roman Holiday
The plot of the film tells about the adventures of a young princess Anna, who was in Rome. And tired of political meetings, she decides on a solo adventure in the Eternal City.
After watching Breakfast at Tiffany’s, I wanted to continue exploring the films that starred the beautiful Audrey Hepburn and came across the 1953 film Roman Holiday.
After watching the tape, I liked the actors who played the main roles and the way the plot is presented. It has everything in moderation, namely the love between the characters and a little fight in the plot. Unlike modern foreign films, here the characters do not jump a little - so immediately in bed like each other.
Watching the film, I thought that such pictures are lacking in the modern world and despite the fact that the picture is shot in black and white, the shots are not repelled by their grayness, you forget about it following the story of the characters. The relationships of the main characters are very nice for their time. But there is something special about them today. Probably because of the successful duet of actors – Peck-Hepburn.
As a result, I recommend the film for viewing with the classics of world cinema. It is necessary to see the film to love the film and go with them on the Roman holidays.
The legendary romantic comedy of the stunning American director William Wyler (The Heir, Ben-Hur, How to Steal a Million) sparkles about an unforgettable weekend for a young princess who arrived in Rome for an official visit and fled from pesky obedient guardians in search of new adventures, which she lacks in her hierarchical and strict royal life.
A cunning journalist, who accidentally met the royal in a very cheerful mood, is forced to shelter ineptness in his apartment, and, soon realizing who she really is, decides to turn an inventive business, showing the beauty local sights and creating a deafening article on the freedom-loving heiress to the throne, launched into all serious.
But will everything go according to the plan of a clever correspondent? . .
It is worth noting that this tape has an outstanding duet of major artists. Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn are incredibly suitable for each other and form a unique chemistry in the union of the characters played. Although these roles were originally supposed to take Cary Grant and Elizabeth Taylor! It is amazing how everything would have played differently, but it is obvious that the desired tandem formed an unsurpassed love perfection that can make the viewer laugh and give him all the shades of sadness.
Roman Holiday is a brilliant romantic comedy that gives you the opportunity to watch a pure, sincere and true love story, fascinatingly showing the versatility of the union of two hearts.
General impression: William Wyler is an incredible director, he knows how to fill the story with a special atmosphere. The plot is usually heard, immersed in a special world, where everything is somehow cozy and attractive. I remember watching Ben-Hura, it was something incredible, amazing! As for the “Roman Holidays”, I postponed them for a long time, pushing them further and further. It's time. A beautiful Audrey Hepburn, a courageous Gregory Peck and a wonderful story with a melodramatic note.
Is it hard being a princess? It seems that everything is so simple, but in fact everything is not what it seems. Princess Anne arrives in Rome on an official visit. Her days are painted by minute – receptions, visits to factories, interviews ... in general, longing! She is a girl, she wants freedom and she runs away from the palace to the street, where the inhabitants of the Eternal City walk, sing and kiss. Alas, shortly before the escape, the doctor gave her an injection of sleeping pills and the princess falls asleep on a bench. American journalist Joe Bradley, who returns home after an evening at the card table, passes by. Early in the morning, on the instructions of the editor, he must be at a press conference with Princess Anne, whom he has never seen in the eye.
Amazing romcom, from which the mood rises in a moment! Lightness is felt in each frame, and a smile looms on the face itself. Look at the beautiful Hepburn-Pek couple, so cute, so cute, fell in love with these guys! Of course I recommend it! The black-and-white picture beckons, and the story fascinates with its tart note of a love cocktail and a maaali travel.
It would seem that the life of a young princess should be easy and fun. Dear toilets, honor and respect of guests, feasts, servants. But it's not that simple. A young princess wants to know the other side of the world. She enthusiastically watches from the window of the palace for ordinary residents of the city and only dreams of being there. One day she decides to escape. The princess spent a beautiful day outside the palace, was at dances, and watched the sights, and even cut off her luxurious curls, having managed to drive several men mad at once.
But, dear ones, this is not just a melodrama. The young princess is in danger. What would have happened to her, her reputation, and her reputation for love if it weren’t for love? The answer to this question you will learn in the film
Was it me, or was it too long? The film deals with important issues of human relationships. There's a lot to think about. The French kiss is best seen in the original: D
A Wonderful Day in the Eternal City or What Princesses Want
Melodrama. The first and most famous role of the beautiful Audrey Hepburn. It is time to finish the marathon of paintings with her participation. What I can say is that it was interesting, exciting, and even fun to some extent. This picture was specially left ' for dessert' in order to get the maximum pleasure from viewing - and did not regret it. And here is my brief opinion - a mind-blowing day in the Eternal City. I will immediately note that I do not intend to talk about the disadvantages, because there are no such. Well, or rather, there is, though it will already be in the field of nagging, so I do not intend to hammer your head with them. Therefore, I will dwell on the expressive merits of this legendary picture, which for all the years since its release has become a classic of world cinema.
So here they are:
1. The young princess Anne arrives on an official visit to Rome, but endless receptions, presentations, social events tire her so much that one day she decides to escape. It is found by a passerby who turns out to be an American journalist who has a unique chance to collect exclusive material. Will he be able to do that? How will a princess hide her social status? What will come of all this? Romance in its pure form, undisturbed, maybe a little pretentious and pretentious, but so attractive. The princess and the journalist in two hours of timekeeping go through a series of funny, dramatic, and simply interesting adventures, which are not only interesting to watch, but even want to move on the other side of the screen and join the characters. Many critics, and audiences both in our country and in the West, consider this romantic story the best in the cinema - I strongly disagree! I have a story that interrupts this, but it's pure subjectivity. Personally, I liked this story, but I simply have no right to call it the best, since my heart has already chosen another!
2. Rome is the first Hollywood movie to be shot entirely in Europe, and it feels like it. The beauty of the Eternal City is represented in all its glory. History connoisseurs and tourists will surely recognize many monuments where the main characters visited during the film. And although not all of them managed to show, but aesthetic pleasure this fact delivers. Even despite the fact that the painting is black and white, it managed to convey the full power of the charm of these ancient ruins, left over from the once greatest empire on planet Earth.
3. Humor - I was very pleased with this fact, because all the comedic moments were successful. The absurdities, sometimes curvatures, sometimes hard hamstrings - all work on the images of heroes. No comedy moment will cause a violent reaction here, but a light smile and laughs are definitely guaranteed to you!
4. The finale, and that was really a surprise. He is happy on one side and sad on the other. But he's certainly logical. It hints at the whole mood of the picture and the behavior of the main character. I still haven't decided how I feel about him. On the one hand, I understand the characters and I am sad, on the other hand, I am happy, because circumstances are sometimes much stronger than us. I expected a well-known outcome on everything, but this fairy tale, a fairy tale about a princess and a commoner, is magnificent, unforgettable, sensual. This is how it turned out.
A bit about the main characters:
1. Princess Anne played by Audrey Hepburn is a young heiress to the throne. A little cocky, partly naive, spoiled girl who wanted adventure on his head. How could she know what her decision would lead to? Beauty Audrey magnificently played a young princess, who during the timekeeping transformed and knew love - this is an eternal feeling, without which it is very difficult for a person to be himself. Bravo Audrey!
2. Joe Bradley, played by Gregory Peck, is a journalist who picked up a stranger and brought her to his home until he accidentally found out who she was. At first, he behaves prudently and cynically, which results in a sea of various funny (and for someone not) situations, but gradually he comes to the realization. Gregory perfectly embodied the role of man in one of the most unscrupulous professions on Earth. His hero at first do not empathize, but the further, as they say, the more interesting. Bravo Gregory!
The picture was a resounding success in the world box office, only in America the fees were quite modest. Even the premiere in the Soviet Union was very warm. Even the party's censors were concerned about the extraordinary success of this melodrama. It was the melodrama, not the romantic comedy, the script for which was written by the famous Hollywood screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, who in those years suffered greatly for ' sympathy for the Communists', because of which his name was deleted from their credits of the picture. Only two decades later, justice was restored.
It’s time to finish the marathon and I’m confused. I can't pick the best picture with Audrey, even though I've seen five of them, and in all of them Audrey was amazing and gorgeous. I don't know what to do!
As a result, we have an excellent melodrama about the mind-blowing adventures of a young princess and a smart journalist, with a good romantic story, excellent views of the Eternal City and beautiful acting works. The duet of Audrey and Gregory is great!

“Roman Holiday” is one of those movies where you ask yourself one question: how the hell did I not see it yet? Has he been around for a hundred years? Wonderful movie! The first serious role of the then unknown Audrey Hepburn. In the role of the “bird in a golden cage” she is cute and natural, but she has so much beauty and charm that just an eye can not take away.
Film directed by William Wyler ' Roman Holiday' is one of the best romantic comedies in world cinema. I love this movie, and it always comes back with a smile. The picture is beautiful, made with soul and kindness. This film warms the hearts of the audience, and after so many years, new generations can enjoy this film and enjoy watching it, because it is also beautiful and has its great cinematic value.
This film has been and remains in the hearts of many people for many generations. The picture is bright and sincere, it has something native and beautiful, and the story itself is full of the magic of love and kindness hidden in each of us.
Meet the lovely, young Princess Anne, who is on an official visit to Rome. All her time is scheduled, constant meetings and political affairs. Anna is so tired of it and wants to escape from her duties as a princess for just one day. She makes one night and runs away from the palace. The doctor gave her a sedative shot, and soon Anna falls asleep in one of the shops on the street. The girl is found by an American journalist. The most interesting thing is that he was supposed to interview the princess tomorrow, but he never saw her in the eye. Before us is a lovely story of a princess and journalist, full of adventure and fateful acquaintance in Rome.
Where do you live?
- Colosseum.
- Come on, you're not that drunk.
The duet of Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn has become a cult. How well both actors played that there are no words. Personally, this is my favorite role of Audrey, and she played her Princess Anna amazingly well. It is impossible to break away from her, and Hepburn was the heart of the story. As for Peck, he played perfectly. There is so much kindness and something nice to experience watching this movie, watching their characters.
This is a perfect story of friendship, a perfect story of pure love. The ending is especially remembered. The film awakens something good in us and shows how good reigns in our world no matter what, how beautiful and fragile our life is, and we must appreciate what we have, be able to be happy, find joy in small things.
39 Never be afraid to follow the call of your heart and decide to do reckless things. Have you forgotten that life is only given once, however banal it may sound.' (c) Anna.
The film is very charming, everything is thought out in detail. In addition to successful actors and good directing, the details of the entourage on the bottom were shown great. The trip to Rome itself is exciting. Especially remember the scene when Joe frightened Anna at a mysterious place where the hand can bite off the liars.
This is the standard of what a romantic comedy should be. There are movies that are mandatory to watch, and this is exactly what it is.
'Roman Holiday' - American, black and white, legendary comedy with a taste of melodrama in 1953. As a result, this movie is beautiful and you don’t need too many words and praise about it – you just need to watch it. Thank you.
The desire of every self-respecting lady to find her “prince on a horse” is not a cunning dream and quite normal. In the case of Anna, the subconscious female attitude turned quite differently: journalist Joe (Gregory Peck), being an ordinary newspaper reporter, finds his own princess (and not even on a pony, but on a wooden bench) and delivers the unconscious body to a cramped removable room. Is it necessary to talk about the next sobering up of the heiress to the throne and her awareness of the situation? Actually, it is necessary, but viewing this vaunted picture, without any second thought, will quite say everything for itself.
Without banknotes and unnecessary prudence, William Wyler provides the viewer with a prototype of the princess, performed by luxuriously cute Audrey Hepburn. It is hard to believe, but it is this girl of royal blood, raised on the state and with a good hundred servants, wanders at night under tranquilizers in a huge city, steals a moped and eats ice cream with an unfamiliar man. This man himself is polished, like Humphrey Bogart in the best years, and has exceptionally good (almost) intentions. A crazy and futuristic idyll, in a word.
But it is worth noting that by the time of the film’s creation, there were already Gone with the Wind, Hitchcock’s Rebecca and his, not at all serious work Mr. and Mrs. Smith. All of these melodramas are an order of magnitude stronger than the story of the adventures of a freedom-hungry princess. At least with content that includes something more than lyrics.
Here, there is a strong plot, with a completely weak implementation, almost a lack of humor and a strong love line. Nice, of course, but relying on the charismatic face of Audrey, it turns out only romance for the sake of romance. That's a pretty good idea.
A romantic comedy about an incredible couple who become a classic story that is hard not to admire.
This is a charming love story about a princess (Hepburn) who falls in love with a reporter (Gregory Peck) during an official visit to the Eternal City.
He was nominated for an Oscar in 11 nominations and received 3 of them, and the script was written by the notorious Dalton Trumbo (this fact was hidden for about 40 years), who was also posthumously awarded the Oscar in 1993.
Eternal classic timeless, with a naive sense of fun and completely charming playing Hepburn equally combined I bright and charismatic American Peck.
The film made in Rome is great. Even in black and white, these cobbled streets and ancient buildings stand out today as one of the world’s landmarks.
Hepburn and Peck are a charming couple. They both display an almost childlike delight as they run through the streets, shop and sip drinks in an open-air cafe. These are simple charms that can be taken for granted by those who have them as part of their daily lives. But for the likes of Bradley and the princess, it's like a slice of paradise that's getting better thanks to the company they share.
There are often few opportunities in life to go on an adventure, even the smallest. Work, routine, and other commitments keep people in offices and closer to home. However, sometimes it's good to go and do something crazy, even if others might find it mundane. It’s all about fun and finding pleasure in the simplest things. If it happens more often, it is an adventure.
The Roman Holiday is a simple adventure in which the princess is distracted from her royal duties and spends a day in Rome.
There are films for all time, and there are - in the spirit of his time. Most films reflect the trends of their era. This is reflected in the acting, in the plot, in the entourage, costumes and the overall atmosphere. Therefore, many films of the 1950s watch now quite unusual, from the point of view of modern reality. This picture, I think, is perfect. Everything is so beautiful and real, and the characters believe, and the plot develops as it should, and the actions of the characters are complex. And Gregory Peck with Audrey Hepburn are beautiful then and beautiful now. It was from this film that my love for Audrey Hepburn began.
Immortal film! In the heart of Italy, a young princess named Anna comes along with representatives of her embassy. The girl is a real princess, no worse than fairy tale heroes. She is smart, beautiful and knows the rules of etiquette. Only here a young and cheerful girl is difficult to constantly be at social events, she sometimes wants to escape from the guardianship of her courtiers, have fun like ordinary people. And after one of these official meetings, the princess broke her patience and began to cry. The doctor gave her a sedative, but it did not work immediately. She managed to sneak out of the palace and go on her first independent walk around Rome. But here's the bad luck, sleeping pills worked at the most inopportune moment, and she fell asleep right in the park on the bench. Passing by a sleeping girl American reporter Joe Bradley and could not suspect that she was the one for whom he came to Italy, the man had to interview the young princess. But Joe could not have imagined that he was a real princess. Together, the couple spend a weekend that will remain in the memory of both for many years.
On Audrey Hepburn You can look endlessly - like water, fire, stars! - that's really - nature has tried! - so she's also a beautiful actress!
A film about the eternal, about what really warms our life and makes it beautiful! About people capable of action, honest, open, able to rise above vulgarity and mercantileness, so characteristic of the modern world, obsessed with “earning” and consumption! Money and acquired things cannot be saved, preserved, sooner or later they turn into dust. In the high feelings that visited us there is something divine, illuminating our life, giving it meaning and meaning!
This is a standard film - how to make a real movie. A film shot at the dawn of cinema and now looks in one breath. Screenplay, acting, camera work, editing – all of the highest quality. A beautiful story made with great taste and real movie charm. Watch and enjoy. And it would not be bad if modern directors, before creating their crafts, at least occasionally turned to the classics of cinema. And it is very good if at least a little could bring their "masterpieces" to such films.
Gregory Peck is the ideal of masculinity and Rome is a beautiful, eternal city. The story is wonderful. In general, the entire film in every moment worked out 100% by the director, cameraman, actors. This film does not need coloring, in our perception it already glows and plays with the brightest colors and joyful tones. Such a cute charming film, I want to smile, feel sorry, enjoy life. Despite the black and white format, the film brought so many bright colors. It looks easy and easy.
A film that carries a huge charge of positive. This is a quiet, calm, measured and funny story. There is nothing extraordinary in the plot, but at the same time the film has not sunk into the cinematic summer under the yoke of the past years, the “vacations” are revised by far not the first generation of film lovers and film lovers. What's the secret of the painting? I think this is the merit of Audrey, airy Audrey Hepburn. She is the embodiment of this melodrama, a complete reflection of her atmosphere and mood: light, open, positive and charming. For the princess Anna, Audrey received an Oscar and I want to say that as an actress (by the time of filming is still quite inexperienced), her merit in this is not small, and she is also by nature the same as it was necessary for the film. Naturally and at ease looks Audrey under the sight of the camera. Looking at her, inside you feel a kind of lightness, filled with warm and spring, mood, just want to smile. And so I think the film is going to be revisited and will not be revisited for another decade.
I love this movie, I love the charming Audrey Hepburn and the gorgeous Gregory Peck! A wonderful movie - touching, kind and bright, with simple dialogues, easy "old" humor and surprisingly natural ending! Rome (although black and white) and the musical accompaniment are also beautiful!
"Rome!" Of course Rome! - breaking etiquette and making her personal, lively adjustments to the official speech, said the princess Anna!
The film can be watched endlessly. Masterpieces never get old!
Summer is a time when you want to forget about all the worries, deeds and go on adventures. Which city is better suited than Rome?
Director William Wyler has made many beautiful films, but “Roman Holiday” with the charming Hollywood princess and world “style icon” Audrey Hepburn and handsome Gregory Peck in the lead roles is my favorite film. This is an amazing romantic tale about the love of a young sophisticated princess and an enterprising journalist.
Every Audrey Hepburn movie is a celebration for the aesthetes. And “Roman Holiday” is a double holiday: the viewer admires the delightful beauty of the 24-year-old radiant Hepburn in standard elegant outfits against the backdrop of the sun-drenched Eternal City.
Being a princess is a great work, especially for a young woman who dreams of fun dancing, music, walking through the narrow streets of Rome and romance. And instead, Princess Anne is forced to conduct boring small conversations with aristocrats, take hours of balls, make lavish speeches and wave a pen to Europe welcoming her.
Anna decides to escape from the palace and from this moment begins her unforgettable Roman vacation.
The film fascinates with its immediacy and sincerity of the main characters. It has no special effects, intricate plot, battle scenes. But it has something more and more important for art than all of the above – warmth, beauty and great acting. You really believe that Audrey Hepburn is a princess, and Gregory Peck is in love with her. And the magnificent city – Rome, where they walk, recognizing and falling in love with each other – is also part of a big plan.
Everyone, whether a princess or a worker, needs to feel loved. This is the simplest and most natural desire. Nothing but love and care can make a girl’s eyes shine and be filled with children’s laughter. The simplest, it would seem, things you do with a loved one: sit in a cafe, eat ice cream on the Spanish stairs, throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain, ride a moped near the Colosseum, dance on a barge and swim in the Tiber – acquire special importance. The experienced moments of joy and the first love remain in the heart forever, pleasing it with sweet memories.
I often watch this movie. And when, after a long cold winter, I dream of a warm summer, and when it is sad, and vice versa, when the soul is bright and joyful and I want to prolong this state.
Some movies have an amazing ability to become your friends. "Roman Holiday" is one of those beautiful films.
“I love people who make me laugh. I think laughter is what I love most. Perhaps that is the most important thing in a person, said Audrey Hepburn. She was a charming, bright, kind and beautiful creature. And all the films with her participation are proof of that.
In art, especially in cinema, the most important thing is sincerity. Audrey Hepburn had this gift. Therefore, films with her participation have become so beloved by viewers around the world. They are timeless because beauty, soulfulness, purity, kindness, spontaneity will never go out of fashion. Like real masculinity, nobility, charisma and charm of Gregory Peck.
Their duet in the film is so harmonious and natural that millions of viewers, fascinated by the film, try to repeat these “Roman holidays”.
That's the magic of art. To bring joy and change people for the better, in my opinion, the highest purpose of cinema, which justifies its existence.
"Roman Holiday" became a classic of world cinema. And once again, watching it, I have the thought: was I born at that time? But, as you know, times do not choose – they live. In this light film, it makes a lot of sense not to be afraid to take risks and love.
Life is given to us in order to come true. Never be afraid to follow the call of your heart and decide on good reckless actions, which can then become the best memories of your life.
Let each of us have our own “Roman holidays” at least once in our lives.
Everything you need if you want to laugh, sad and think about life
I realized I had never watched Roman Vacations just before I went to Rome. And since I am a terrible lover before traveling to get acquainted with the places of my directions through literature and films, I could not miss this opportunity.
This review will probably lack objectivity, as I’m a priori excited about the Audrey Hepburn movies. Because there may be hundreds of pretty faces, but not everyone is gifted with such light, charm, charisma and mischief. Audrey Hepburn is one of those lucky ones. It seems to me that in every film with her, the director was a kind of jeweler, cutting a precious stone.
The plot is not new. Heir to the throne, suffering from restrictions, unnecessary honor and all these conventions. Ariel, Moana, the list could be long. And as you know from these paintings, uninvited blue blood at some point begins to boil in the veins, and then without rebellion will not do. So our princess, tired of routine and her duties, decides to rush into the abyss of real life, so unknown and alluring.
And--meets the prince. What's a fairy tale without a prince? Arrogant, cunning, with such playful eyes. Well, in general, the type of prince who came to replace the valiant heroes, kind of handsome people, when they went into the category of banality.
Well, that's where it starts. I will not go into details, but it is like a dream of 15-year-old girls about a wonderful pastime with a loved one. Adventure, romance, dance, spontaneity.
By the way, Rome, unfortunately, I did not find this. Just like in the meme of expectation - reality.
What a denouement. From those cases when you do not understand what the director decides to do: to end the film as a beautiful fairy tale or to return it to the realities of real life, where we can not always do what we want, even if the desire is very great. But even so, we can always soak up those memories, turn the page, and enjoy the sweet melancholy left behind by those stories.
And yes, my expectations were met! It's a beautiful movie. Alive, kind... I would even say colorful, even though the tape is black and white.
8 out of 10
I have long been filled with the desire to see the legendary picture, and now my dream came true! As always, I didn’t write a review. And, having gathered my thoughts, I want to share my impressions of the picture! Despite the fact that the film is black and white, it caused me more interest than some other color paintings!
In the film, I did not see the minuses (if only translation, but maybe I got this version of the film).
I would like to note the endless pluses of the picture:
1) A simple but sad love story of a princess and an ordinary journalist. What could be better to watch!
2) Beautiful Rome! I always wanted to see the old town in the 50s. I love Rome, and the adventures on the scooter inspired me! I also want to ride a scooter!
(3) I never cease to admire the magnificent actress and style icon of the time - Audrey Hepburn! This role is specially designed for her!
(4) And also a lot of sparkling humor! I laughed to tears!
I want to float in the sky,
Like a bird flying high.
Don’t think it will be easy.
The tape of William Wyler is close to all those people who at least once cherished themselves with thoughts about changing the situation. The film will touch the soul of all those whose heart was able to live for a moment, but that moment was joyful, and if you voice the word “joyful” more lofty, then this moment was almost the happiest in the lives of these people. In addition, the picture dispelled in the wind the desire of some young dreamers to become princesses, because in the example of the heroine Audrey Hepburn – Anna, it becomes more than obvious that for the royal chambers the price is high, and somewhere deep in the soul, the girl dreams of freedom. She wants to be free of everything, from points, endless events, during which you have to be dressed in shoes that are wildly pressing, from bowing to unknown sheikhs and attending parades, parades, where you need to smile, trying to drown in that smile boredom, clearly flashing in her eyes.
"When will this all end?" The viewer thinks, empathizing with Anna, because Audrey Hepburn was so subtly and sensually conveyed the image of a rich, but unhappy person in the soul that it is only time to be surprised by her infinite talent. But back to the “when?” question, when will this change take place, and will we see the princess’ eyes glow? The director will answer all these questions in a slow rhythm, competently using the timekeeping. At least a little later we will be destined to see the princess sleeping on the hard surface of the stone, and sleepily declaring "I am very happy," who knows, maybe this was the happiest episode of her life? It could be.
At twelve the carriage will be a pumpkin
Indeed, the story of Princess Anne resembles the story of Cinderella, only here it is the opposite and Anna Cinderella breaks from the world of royal shackles visible only to her eyes, to ordinary people, hairdressers, vegetable sellers, waiters, flower sellers, and confectioners, from the shops of which in the morning the aroma of buns that have just begun to blush on a slow fire. This is Rome, the girl escaped, and from the beginning of the story it was not so long, our “Alice” as if in the mirror, would be her way difficult and not memorable, but journalist Joe Bradley makes Anna’s escape special. Her trip to Rome will take place on the streets of the city, if her blood was not hot, then she would admire the city, but adventure and madness would be replaced by a view from the window, and this girl of the royal family did not agree. The second half of the film is a pit, a pit of human feelings, all actions seem to personify the impulsivity of the film, no matter how stupid it may sound. Heroes Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck are forced to play by the rules of this world, to play so that trust in the feelings of their screen characters does not become ephemeral, the second part of the story shows a truly fascinating spectacle, but any adventure risks ending at the very beginning of its journey. Hurt? Yeah. Vital? Yeah.
I remembered the comment to the film, left in the online cinema, of course, if short, the film can be described like this: Mona Mi! What a movie, what feelings. The definition very accurately characterizes the brainchild of Wyler. How close is this movie to us? Everyone wants a vacation? No, everyone wants to live a full life, not in bondage. Everyone wants love, only she is not always good-natured, as well as crafty fortune, she loves to plot plots, like the cunning goddess Aphrodite, who did not play her games in any way, did not spare the arrows of her Cupids, and so cruelly snatching them out afterwards.
Only old people dream of nothing. If your heart grows old, your dreams will never come true.
- Where do you live?
- Colosseum.
- Come on, you're not that drunk.
Again in the Top 250 presented the 50s. Namely the movie "Roman Holiday". I wasn’t familiar with the movie until then, but I’ve seen a few movies with Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn. So now I will evaluate probably their most famous work in cinema.
The movie is actually pretty good. Then they were able to shoot, without any technical tricks and lotions. In those ancient times, this kind of films dragged the plot and acting. That's what happened here. I will not say that I came from the picture in full delight, but the pluses are quite a lot.
The plot is quite straightforward, but oddly enough, it is impossible to predict what will happen next. It seems that the story does not shine with some overly ingenious moves, but it is still difficult for the modern viewer to determine what will happen in the next moment because of the vagaries of the main character.
I can see why this movie won three Oscars. In those distant years, this story would have been fresh and seemed the embodiment of the ideal project, both from the side of script work and acting.
I can’t say anything more bad about the movie, nor can I say anything good. Maybe it was a hit at the time, but after more than sixty years it looks a little boring.

He who has seen Italy, and especially Rome, will never again be entirely unhappy.
I. V. Goethe
Life is not always the way you want it to be, and often its rhythm becomes unpleasant to the heart. A sense of duty bows its head to the ground, deprives it of peace and causes a superfluous beat in the temples. The crowned share is responsible, separated from simple human happiness. Days flow into weeks, they merge into months and they merge into years. All life goes according to routine, but there is something in it that the official protocol does not know - pleasant memories. They will remain in the heart, no matter how many countries flash before expressive black eyes. The world is great, but Rome is one. No matter how graceful Princess Anne knows the stanza, but for the best of her holidays, she can not find words. It is better to see and feel for yourself. To feel in the soul the ray of royal happiness, which for some reason turns out to be fleeting. But, hiding in the night, it will leave a rare postcard. People imprinted on it have real images, honest smiles, sincere eyes. And also - a slight sadness from the fact that life did not stop that summer day, but continued the flight, carrying with it a sunny comedy.
Where, if not in the Eternal City, is it better to get in touch with history and, if you are lucky, make a modest contribution to it? During its long life, Rome knew different times, experienced the fall and pogroms, but each time rose up to give a carefree atmosphere to all walkers and everyone who looks. On the steps of the Spanish Steps or at the base of the Colosseum, next to the Trevi Fountain or on the Tiber embankment, anywhere you can feel the breath of wind, carrying the fluids of romantic madness. It provokes the escaped princess to an absurd race behind the wheel of a scooter. It forces a cunning reporter to indulge maiden quirks in the hope of an exclusive interview. And it turns grown-ups into young adventurers living momentary pleasures. Somewhere far behind the scenes is everything that does not belong on vacation: duties, reports and dull adherence to the rules. Just for a day, but Anna and Joe will find out how beautiful nature conceived of mutual sympathy. It is known in spite of English conservatism, German pedantry, French dreaminess, Dutch rebelliousness and Scandinavian melancholy. In the heart of Italy, love of a special character is impetuous and sudden, passionate and all-encompassing. The knowledge of a motley bouquet of sensations and a whole life is not enough, but eternity, whose integral part was the “Roman Holiday”, should be enough.
The subtle directorship of William Wyler snatches out details like the revived fresco that make up the acquaintance of the princess and the journalist. Anna’s desire to sleep in her pajamas, her new hairstyle, the test of “The Word of Truth”, hilarious brawl on the floating dance floor – pleases the variety of fragments that accompany the affection of young people. In some other circumstances, the thought of the undoubted absurdity of everything that is happening would surely flash, but thanks to a friendly presentation, one would rather want to plunge into the pool of adventure on his own than understand how it happened. Full of comic situations, wandering around Rome infect with its naturalness, which surprisingly harmoniously complements the fabulous essence of the picture. The scorching heat seems to dry up fiction, and it seems that the name of the country of the princess is not pronounced, so as not to offend a dozen worthy candidates.
More than once, sneaking, a sobering realization is picked up that the reckless happiness of casual lovers will not last forever and can break off at the most awkward moment, but every time rigor fades before the liveliness of emotions that did not require any artificiality. Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn did not play typewriters on the set, their characters gained such truthfulness because they connected with the features of the actors themselves. Loyalty to the word and dignity, intelligence and grace, purposefulness and openness - it is impossible to convince of the sincerity of spiritual impulses if they are far from yourself. You fall in love with a few madmen as easily as you fall in love with the millennial architecture of the Eternal City. Otherwise it does not work – Rome was built too thoroughly, so that at the designated hour past the camera slipped false.
But no matter how meaningful the rest came out, and it tends to end. For the holidays come weekdays, and from the past fun will be only pictures. If you imagine human memory in the form of a giant archive, there will inevitably be images that you do not want to extract. It is always a dream to be on top, to react to everything correctly and to meet the new day with a wide smile. Life, however, will never get rid of the stripes any more than the Tiber flows the other way. The film of “Roman Holiday” captures only one moment – the one between the past and the future, but it strangely contains the most common dreams – love, recognition, inspiration. Like a tiny town in a glass ball, Jo and Anna's Rome is able to constantly turn in new ways, maintaining an enviable extraordinary. To recognize the most important, you can pick up an incredible number of words, and all of them will be true. And to express joy in the heart, enough and affectionate look.
It is impossible to look in the sun without dark glasses. But the sun, presented and left by Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn, will not burn the eye, and the soul will illuminate. He will do it every time he is the first.
The title of this film will catch your eye if you are interested in the eternal city of Rome, and will surely add the route of its characters if you ever find yourself in the capital of Italy. The decision of the studio to shoot a picture not in the studio pavilions, but among the attractions, turned out to be fateful for, now, a real classic of world romantic cinema. The Roman Forum, the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, the Castle of St. Angela - the authenticity of real locations makes a proper impression and tickles the desire to travel, follow what you see on the screen.
The characteristic that emerges after thirty minutes of viewing is ease. After their unusual acquaintance, the characters deliberately erase the social chasm between themselves, as much as possible, discard conventions and simply walk around Rome, smoothly moving from one part of the historical center to another. This romantic, pure from vulgar comparisons, is a line of necessity, in the pious sense of the word. The whole world around remains exactly the same as the day before, but the duo of heroes for this day is removed from the hustle, conventions and stereotypes that are alive sixty years after the release of the film.
Although we are soon made to understand that an unobtrusive walk through Rome means much more to each of the characters than he shows, the story remains fundamentally simple, kindly predictable. This is a kind of road adventure, during which Joe and Anna not only get to know each other better, but also get acquainted with interesting fellow travelers, places and even undergo trials. In both cases, there is a development of characters, but in their own way they are cute and attractive from the very beginning of their journey. The beautiful acting of Gregory Peck and Audrey Helburn became the card of the film.

It's a beautiful fairy-tale movie! But, despite all its fabulous, this story about Cinderella, on the contrary, turned out to be very realistic, as much as it is possible for a movie at all. Joe, like any ordinary person, does not strive to be a hero - to save a beautiful stranger. He is not an evil person, so pity for a girl sleeping on the street fights in him with laziness and the desire to get home as soon as possible. No, she's sorry, but maybe someone else will save her. I'll even give you money, just so I don't move. Very vital. And even then, when the wizard in the blue helicopter did not even arrive for money and had to save himself, he still strives to push Anna from a comfortable bed to the couch. And Anna in a dream does not take elegant high-artistic poses, but sleeps like a person: curled up with a glomerulus, stretching bare heels from under the blankets and even quietly squeaking in a dream. Little things, it seems, but from such small things, too, confidence in the film is formed.
But mostly, of course, "Roman Holiday" is a wonderful fairy tale. And according to the laws of the fairy tale, everything in it is delightfully beautiful. Damn good Joe Bradley, good even some demonic beauty. Anna -- there's one word here -- Audrey Hepburn. Thanks to Roman Holiday for discovering this actress. By the way, I do not know the “pre-canicular” works of Audrey, so the question arose: is not this film we owe the transformation of a beautiful but ordinary long-haired girl into a bright and inimitable Audrey with a short haircut?
But the main character of this beauty is black and white, large-format, bright Rome. For some reason, I don't see it as Rome, but as just an abstract, beautiful southern city. In this City, the children jump through ancient sculptures and fountains, in this City, magnificent attics, roofs, balconies, cozy courtyards and stairs are driven mad. (Ah, Joe Bradley's lovely apartment isn't it the dream house?) This city is an eternal holiday, and I want to live here.
It is among this beauty and magic that it is so easy to understand how little a person sometimes needs for happiness: to eat ice cream, wear elegant sandals, go dancing on the Tiber to return in the evening with his beloved to a small room under the roof, from where a wonderful view of the old roofs of the Eternal City opens. And yet, how much a person needs for happiness: normal and sincere relationships between people. Happiness is to wave a hand to a random couple on a motorcycle and get a smile back. Happiness is when a flower seller gives you a rose for nothing. These are people who, despite the material damage you caused them, congratulate you with all their hearts, because you went to get married! This is a meeting tonight with the morning barber. It's a fun dance fight where strangers stand up for you because you're ours and you've been hurt. This is, after all, the awakened conscience in the journalist!
That is why the end of the film is painfully sad. No, it is logical, and the other end would spoil the impression of this realistic fairy tale, but how sorry Anya! Yes, she returns a completely different, grown-up, not a princess, but a queen, and there will be no more tired milk crackers in her life, but... It is a pity that their unfulfilled love with Joe will keep the memory of her forever, and no one can take away this memory from them. It is not so much a pity that Anya loses, it is a pity for the senselessness of this loss. What a debt to the people! No nation has ever died without princesses and kings. So why are you torturing a girl?

I recently watched this wonderful movie. I have long wanted to meet him, after all, Audrey Hepburn in the title role, a comedy, 84th place in the Top 250 best films of CinemaPoisk, but his hands still did not reach him. But then I finally tuned in, sat down and watched, and it was something I hadn’t experienced in a very long time such an immersion in relationships, love and an easy touch of adventure! In this picture there are all elements of the comedy genre, a witty plot, excellent acting, magnificent scenery, an unusual situation or theme, but about everything in order.
Plot
Princess Anne comes to Rome on an official visit, every day she has receptions, balls, interviews, visits to factories and factories. But now she is exhausted and throws a tantrum in the palace, then the doctor injects her with a sedative and after a while, when the princess was left alone, she was able to escape from the life of Princess Anne and become an ordinary person, but unfortunately as soon as she broke free, she was sedated and very abruptly wanted to sleep. Suddenly, a young man named Joe shows up, who can’t let this girl stay outside at such a late hour. He first decided to send her home by taxi, but making sure she couldn’t say a word decided to send her home. In the morning, he learns in his editorial office that the girl who is sleeping with him is the same Princess Anne, whom he was supposed to interview. Joe decides with his photographer friend to make a devastating article about the personal life of Princess Anne! But in parallel with this task, the main character falls in love with the princess and all this in one day!
Pros
The film as if frozen in time, it can be reviewed and revised, there is a feeling that he will never get bored. The plot will always and everywhere be original, beautiful and simply masterpiece! A person who has ever seen this film will never again be able to see a single minus in it, he will always like it, and he will watch it again and again.
Also a huge plus of the film, you can call the city of Rome. The film takes place in the oldest, one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and the whole world. Watching all the adventures of the main characters in this city, you plunge into the wonderful romance of this city, overflowing with comics that the main characters give us.
But the most significant plus of this film can be called, the game of Audrey Hepburn, as she plays the role of Princess Anne striving for freedom from all the royal fuss and her techniques, just perfect! And her line: " If I had not fully understood my duty to my family and to my country, I would not have returned. Not today, not ever, it was just great!!
The sad ending of this fairy tale (as if in reality), shows the viewer how sometimes in the boring and monotonous life of people there is a person who changes everything (this applies to both characters at the same time). This film also shows us that debt comes first. The main character puts the duty to the family and the country above their feelings, feelings of the young man and above herself.
I advise this film to everyone, it will brighten your life with new sensations that will easily convey to you the face of Audrey Hepburn.

Top 250 marathon. Movie #184: “The Best Drug to Do as You Want”
I’m not a big fan of old Hollywood. Perhaps the only film that is forever in my heart, which I can watch 100 times, is Gone with the Wind, but within the framework of this marathon, I am increasingly convinced that before the films were shot qualitatively, they had a lot of kindness, sincerity and there was no vulgarity.
An example of a high-quality romantic comedy is “Roman Holiday”. The first reason I wanted to get to this movie was the name of the writer. Not so long ago, I watched “Trumbo” – an Oscar nominee in the category “Best Actor in the First Plan” and was shocked by what the real screenwriter of “Roman Holiday” had to endure. While Princess Anne was having a wonderful time in Rome in the pages of his script, he had to spend his forced holidays locked up without the right to creativity and official work. And he did not rise for the cherished Oscar statuette, which the film received for the script.
It is noteworthy that in morally difficult conditions, Trumbo wrote such an easy thing. But still this easy thing distinguishes the ending. It gives the film something special, different from other films in this genre. There is some tragedy and doom in this, and this is just catchy.
In principle, the plot is easy to guess, especially since I have already seen not a remake, but something like London Holiday. Of course, I’m not even going to compare the generally accepted classics with the fact that they have not yet passed the test of time, but in both films the message is clear: sometimes you just need to stop, breathe out and allow yourself to be free and do what you want. I think we all wanted to do that at one time, and that’s what the movie is about. Well, the fact that we are talking about the royal, gives the film romanticism and fairy tale, making it an ideal story for the female half of the audience.
Relative to Audrey. To be honest, I haven’t seen a great game. To be fair, it takes a lot more effort now to win an Oscar in this category (not always, but mostly): for example, to become a monster in the literal and figurative sense of words, as Charlize Theron did, or to play the way Hilary Swank played in Million Dollar Baby. Audrey in the role of Princess Anne was sweet, touching, all emotions well conveyed, but I did not see something outstanding, I repeat. But perhaps in those years there was not such a strong competition, because both films and actresses were many times less.
In general, it turned out to be a beautiful, high-quality thing in terms of the script, in terms of directing, in terms of successful selection of actors. I’m glad to see another comedy in the Top, because it’s rare.

If I did not realize my duty to my country, I would never return to you.
Amazing, sincere, magical and charming! It is impossible to choose one epithet to describe the feelings that this film evokes. Whether it’s the magic of the eternal city of Rome or the magic of filmmaking is a big question, but ladies and gentlemen, I think the three Oscars speak for themselves.
Plot
The story is about a princess who wants to feel what it's like to be a normal girl. And an American journalist who wants to escape from Italy to his homeland. What can there be in common between the two? - That's right, sensation!
The magnificent Dalton Trumbo masterfully shows the evolution of his characters: from the greedy journalist chasing a sensation to the admiring noble man; and from a small submissive princess to an adult girl - the future monarch.
Actors
Miniature Audrey Hepburn with her childishly naive look captivates and causes admiration. And her partner Gregory Peck, a dream man, played at the highest level. His character, who from the beginning evokes a certain antipathy towards the end of the film, attracts sympathetic views from all sides.
The film is light, awesome, fun and romantic. A film of the Golden Hollywood era that you need to watch and love for life.
In 1953, on the eve of the thaw, when the world was again ready to believe in miracles, William Wyler gave mankind a new fairy tale. Although there seems to be nothing more banal than the story of a princess, the beauties of the enchanted Dale.
“Roman Holiday” has long entered all the textbooks on the history of cinema, in all the bases of film schools and tops of the most romantic films of the century. But somehow it manages to be a very personal, very important experience in the soul of many viewers. What is the secret of freshness and spontaneity he has, which is not only not forgotten, but also continues to be one of the most beloved in many parts of our globe?
In this story, everything seems unreal: the eternal city, shining with dazzling whiteness, a beautiful stranger – indeed, too beautiful for this world, idyllic adventures of one day. Everyone but the princess! If it weren’t for Audrey Hepburn’s eyes, much of our lives would have been different. Okay, no exaggeration: our relationship with this movie and this movie would have been very different. Her sincerity and tenderness is what we usually call beauty. But, probably, it is these inner qualities that illuminate this look, this smile and create that beauty and inexpressible charm that have chained us to the screen for many years.
There seems to be so much Princess Anne in Audrey Hepburn, and so much Audrey in Anne, that we happily remain true to this illusoryly beautiful yet tangible image. Therefore, the most beautiful skirts are medium-length claws, so you often break down to the hairdresser to cut your hair and allow yourself a fervent haircut, so Rome is the most beautiful city. It's Rome, no doubt! Perhaps that is why Gregory Peck is so beautiful and attractive in our eyes.
When today we are repeatedly forced to absorb information about the unworthy behavior of those who are easily called idols and legends, who profit from divorces, arrange scandals and forget that acting is a profession, not an honorary badge... So, when the Internet overflows with information brings all this down on us, we want to escape to the world of men - simple, beautiful, noble. And if we talk about cinema, then I want to feel the warmth of the gaze of Gregory Peck or Robert Taylor, to believe that you can preserve human dignity, getting to the height of fame.
It is said that a very young Cosuelo Velázquez Torres from a dense Mexican town wrote the famous words “Besame mucho”, thinking about Gregory Peck. And now it is not so important to find out and investigate whether this is true, it is just interesting to try to imagine what charm this actor had to have to give such a charge of inspiration through the screen, film, camera lens.
Sometimes I want to talk and talk about "Roman Holiday," to remember each episode as if it happened to you. But more often I want to review this film full of light, laughter and love, shot in 1953. At a time when the world seems ready to believe in miracles... And at least one miracle was given to the world – Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck in the movie “Roman Holiday”.
The very first and debut film by Audrey Hepburn, which immediately brought the actress an Oscar and glorified the young actress around the world. Almost 10 years later, when the actress will be slightly over 30, she will play the same beautiful, but already grown-up lady in the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
Very young Audrey surprisingly reminds me of Natalie Portman, almost one face!
According to the plot of the film, the actress plays the queen, tired of this correct, painted by the hours of life and runs away for a day from home in order to enjoy the joys of life of an ordinary young girl. Cutting hair, eating junk food and smoking the first cigarette in his life is not the limit of dreams for the royal, who lived all her life in the “golden cage” under the care of her relatives and the close courtship of servants?
At the same time, her adventure in the beautiful capital of Italy, not without two interesting men on his mind (a reporter and a photographer), who guessed that the heroine, it turns out, is a real queen. And, as expected, did not miss the opportunity to take advantage of the situation and make some scandalous pictures and recordings of the secular person.
However, having fallen in love with the heroine, the male reporter still did not disclose in the press about the behavior of the beautiful queen that day and at the same time acted noblely.
Overall, a nice, kind and easy movie.
One cozy winter afternoon, I was clicking the TV channels in hopes of finding something I wanted to watch. I was lucky to switch right when the Roman Holiday was just beginning. And since I have long wanted to see a good retro, I was happy to plunge into the atmosphere of this movie.
And for some reason, it is not even difficult to imagine that the film was made more than sixty years ago. He is so kind, so warm and so warm. Unfortunately, now only single films can boast of such characteristics. And even more romantic comedies.
Should we talk about acting? Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck did their job perfectly. While there were many beautiful actresses at the time, it’s hard to imagine the princess being played by any other actress than Audrey. And Gregory Peck is in his place as a journalist.
It's a story with a touch of light sadness. Not all fairy tales end exclusively with happy endings. However, this story is in any case magical, real, sincere. After it, I want to believe that in the life of every person should be such a vacation only with a modified end.
Of course, such a movie should become both a classic of the genre and a classic of world cinema. Be sure to watch.
American "Roman Holiday" is naturalness, kindness, purity, magic.
Audrey Hepburn in her best film. She is fascinated by all the real men of the world from small to great.
How funny she was in 1953 (on the set of the film) stood on a narrow street of excavated Ancient Rome at the unpretentious “mouth of truth”, where you could put your hand and test yourself for the truth, risking losing your hand!
In the summer of 2003, I also stood at this “mouth of truth” and am glad that Audrey stood at the same “mouth” half a century ago, where 50 years later our hands met on the same stone, from which one can assume that I had an unforgettable date with her from the Roman “mouth”.
How good it would be to write to her about this and say that she, Audrey, is an unforgettable memory of meeting her in ancient Rome of the eternal city!
The most magical and at the same time the most realistic love story. Interesting, lively characters - an incredibly feminine girl and a stunningly courageous man.
Enjoyed viewing throughout the film, but the finale conquered me completely. C'est la vie - no excessive sweetness, with which they overdo it in modern paintings of this genre. Let the undisguised truth of life, beautifully presented from an aesthetic point of view, be better than the obsessive promises to the viewer “and they lived happily ever after”, which are quite tired of the seekers of sincere cinema.
This touching, sweet and truly soulful film, which just recently turned 62 years old (just think!), and to this day can give a great example of how you can make a wonderful melodrama-drama.
Of course, here, as in 99% of films of this genre, there is an element of "he cheats her, she doesn't cheat him." This element connects almost all the threads of the plot. But how he's beaten! More precisely, how his climax was played! No, no "cheap snot", the characters experience as real, and behave very logically. Not that it is now...
Well, the subject of romance, of course. Here, the relationship that broke out between the heroes is so easy, as if floating above the sky of the Eternal City. There are no far-fetched actions that spark feelings in the heroes. A series of events happened and they came close.
And yes, marvellous Rome. The city is undoubtedly beautiful and remarkable, which is well noticed by the operator and picked up by the director. The influence of the beauty of the city, in my opinion, also played an important role in the success of the film.
The film's success... Did Rome and great technical efforts bring success to the Roman Holiday? No and no again. The main reason for success is the incomparable Audrey Hepburn. It's impossible not to love her. This sweet, beautiful, fragile and sophisticated Princess Anne. The film made her famous, it made the film legendary. I think it’s a good deal...
Bottom line: without evaluating this movie, you have to watch it sooner or later.
A lot has been said about the various merits of the film. I want to mention one thing about which much has been said, but it is a sin not to say again.
Questions like “Your Favorite Actor” tend to baffle me. How do you choose one of dozens of brilliant actors? And they are all different, very different, and each in its own way is unique.
However, oddly enough, for me there is an answer to the question "Your favorite female image in the movies." Again, there were a lot of wonderful female characters in the cinema, and each of them is good in its own way. Some of these images set the style for many years. Cinema knows many beautiful and talented actresses.
But still, Audrey Hepburn stands out here. It is her collective image that is the absolute standard of style. In general, this image goes beyond cinema, goes beyond style and acquires general cultural significance. Audrey Hepburn in her roles on the screen embodied the perfect standard of women as a representative of the human species (at least the white race). That is, say, if aliens come and ask humanity to present their “resume”, they say, tell about yourself, people – in such a “resume” should be pasted a photo of Audrey Hepburn. This is the best thing that humanity has had in the last hundred years.
The fact that Audrey is the absolute standard of style is confirmed by at least the following. Yes, each generation has its own new style icon, a new young beauty, which introduces some new parameters of beauty into fashion. But the old icons are forgotten. That is, if you go through the memory, in old magazines, on the Internet, you can see them again. And although all these girls remain beautiful, they tend to look old-fashioned - well, the fashion for their style is long gone. So gradually erased in the memory of people images of even such superstars as Elizabeth Taylor and Brigitte Bardot, Gina Lollobrigida and Sophia Loren.
And this corruption, as far as I can tell, did not touch only two images, Merlyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn. If you like, these images can even be contrasted.
Monroe’s style is something defiant and vicious, a powerful, barely hidden sexual energy that suggests that the brain and all the other organs of perception should shut down. Yes, the demand for this will not run out and will probably never run out. And this image is complemented by the inner world of Marilyn Monroe. Not about it, but, let’s say, complemented organically.
Hepburn’s style is pure, refined beauty that lies somewhere on the edge of human imagination. And it is not only about appearance, although the whole history of painting can hardly present a more perfect external beauty. In Audrey's case, that beauty is harmonious. In addition to manners (noble origin), grace (ballet school), education and other bonuses, even through the screen, Audrey’s true nature always appears in any role – a deep, subtle, reasonable and noble Man. This is actually the case.
It is this combination of internal and external beauty that makes Audrey Hepburn the absolute standard of style in the best sense of these words.
The fact that Audrey Hepburn’s style is something permanent is easy to see. Go to a store that sells photo frames, or any other place that has a lot of random photos. If you pay attention, make sure there are no photos more popular than Audrey Hepburn. And apart from Monroe, you can hardly find any other stars of the past.
I'm not sure the people who frame these pictures remember who Audrey Hepburn is, because education is low. They just take the standard of beauty to advertise their frames, the standard for all time.
Why am I writing all this in a review of this movie and not any other Audrey Hepburn movie? In my opinion, it is in the "Roman Holiday" Audrey was given the opportunity to play the most organic role for herself. It is Princess Anne who most accurately shows how high the bar raised by Audrey Hepburn is. And, at the same time, in the image of Princess Audrey is more appropriate than any other princess. The role is given to her so easily, simply because that image is the real Audrey. Well, who's pretending a little bit. So it is here that we see the perfect standard of style in the purest and most undisturbed form.
Touch the eternal, eternal perfect female image. Watch this movie.
It happens that a person is given a huge responsibility, because of which his life acquires a stormy rhythm, and a person has to reconcile with his personal desires, hobbies, what he really wants to do. In this situation, a person dreams of breaking free, just to run away, to finally see the world around him. This is exactly what the main character of the cult romantic comedy with the participation of Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck “Roman Holiday” does.
Synopsis Princess Anne travels all over Europe. She has a busy schedule, which takes up endless receptions, greetings, inspections, meetings with the press, etc., etc. The girl is just bored with this life. During a stop in the Eternal City, the princess decides to escape, but shortly before that, the doctor gives her an injection with sleeping pills, because of which Anna falls asleep right on the street. She is accidentally found by American journalist Joe Bradley, who has to interview the princess, having no idea what she looks like. With mercy, Joe takes her home for an unforgettable Roman vacation the next day.
Game of actors I had watched Roman Holiday more than 10 years ago, so until the last time I watched it, I had the impression that the film was about a naive and stupid princess who just doesn’t know life. However, the situation is different, since Audrey Hepburn embodied on the screen the image of not a stupid girl, but an intelligent and ambitious woman who just wants to live at least one day in her life for herself. Princess Anne is well aware that she has a debt to her country, so she is ready to sacrifice her first and probably only true love, although after “Roman Holiday” she will probably never be the same again. Gregory Peck played the role of a classic journalist who is ready to play a performance for the sake of great material, but, Oh Gods!, love changes his views. I can’t help but mention Eddie Albert, who played the role of Irving, Joe’s friend and colleague, who brightened the picture with his comedic image.
Directorship After watching Roman Holiday, I was convinced that William Wyler was a very versatile director. He with stunning success managed to shoot bright and unforgettable paintings of absolutely different genres: from sentimental melodrama to a real epic four-hour action. It was a pleasant surprise to me that a romantic comedy as good and truly smiling as Roman Holiday came out under his direction. Of the distinctive features of directing, it is worth noting that the film turned out to be vital. There are no clichés in the picture. The director does not try to demote the viewer, but rather gives a logical ending, albeit sad.
Scenario At first glance, the plot may seem simple and banal - the princess gets out into people without knowing the real life. However, the idea of the plot is much more interesting, since the main focus is on the changes that happened to Princess Anne. As mentioned earlier, the rich and monotonous life of the heroine not only bored her, but tired. The princess decides to escape. Afterwards, she will spend an extraordinary day, which she will devote to herself, visiting the most famous places in Rome and experiencing the spirit of the Eternal City. Finally, Anna feels free from hardships, and in addition, true love comes to her, which, however, she will not be able to exchange for a debt to her subjects. In general, the writers focused on the issue of freedom and self-realization.
Result Based on the above, we can make a clear conclusion that “Roman Holiday” is a very good and positive movie. This is not just a melodrama, but also a serious psychological, partly even philosophical drama, which will not leave you indifferent.
