Herbert David Ross was born on May 13, 1927 in New York, New York. Graduated from Herbert Berghof Studio in New York. Ross began as a dancer and choreographer on Broadway, then was a musical director, and made his film debut as a choreographer on Carmen Jones (1954). His directorial debut was Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1969). Herbert Ross’ most famous films are Turning Point (1977), which received two Oscar nominations, and Steel Magnolias (1989).
