Russian film director and playwright Andrei Sergeyevich Smirnov was born on March 12, 1941 in Moscow. His father Sergey Sergeyevich Smirnov was a writer. In 1962, Andrei Smirnov graduated from the directorial faculty of VGIK, the workshop of M.I. Romm, and already in 1964 he made a film based on the novel of the same name by G.Y. Baklanov “Fifth of the Earth”.
