Soviet writer Vladimir Korotkevich is considered the founder of the Belarusian historical novel. However, in his homeland he is still well known as a poet, screenwriter, playwright and publicist. Vladimir Korotkevich was born on November 26, 1930 in the city of Orsha, Vitebsk region in the family of an accountant. When the war began, Korotkevich had to evacuate to the Perm region, and later to Orenburg. The future writer returned home only in 1944, and only then he continued his studies and received secondary education, after which he entered the philological faculty of Kyiv State University, where he also graduated from postgraduate studies.
Vladimir Korotkevich worked for several years as a teacher in a Ukrainian rural school, and then returned to Orsha, where he was also a teacher. Later he continued his education at the Higher Literary Courses and the Institute of Cinematography. So Vladimir Semenovich turned from a teacher into a professional writer. In 1962 he moved to Minsk.
The most famous works of Korotkevich are the novel “The ears under your sickle” (1965) and the story, written in the genre of historical detective, “The Wild Hunt of King Stach” (1964). In general, the whole prose of Vladimir Korotkevich, one way or another, is connected with the theme of the historical past of Belarus. The author was most interested in the January uprising of 1863-1865 and, of course, the Great Patriotic War. Korotkevich actively participated in archaeological excavations. One of the most interesting works, still not lost relevance, was the novel “Black Castle Olshansky”, published in 1974.
The collection of works of Korotkevich, in addition to prose works, included several plays, essays, articles, scripts for films. One of the best books Korotkevich is the novel “Leonids will not return to Earth”, for which he became a laureate of the Literary Prize of the Union of Writers of the BSSR named after Ivan Melezh. However, the title had to be changed to “You can’t forget”. Later, the novel was subjected to very harsh criticism, and the writer felt literally trampled.
Vladimir Korotkevich fell seriously ill and died on July 25, 1984.
