Film director Valery Chikov was born on December 22, 1950 in the village of Churilovka, Vologda region. His father worked as a logging master and his mother as a rural teacher. After receiving secondary education, he entered the Leningrad Institute of Aviation Instrumentation, which he graduated in 1974. He continued his studies in graduate school.

In 1982, the film “Lady Tango” was directed by Chikov. As a director, Valery first showed himself in the movie “Red Carriage” based on the story by Vasily Belov. The film was only half an hour, but the debut tape won the Grand Prize of the VITA LONGA film marathon.
