Barry Sonnenfeld was born in the United States, graduated from New York University, where he studied political science, and the New York Film and Television Institute. University classmate Joel Cohen took him as a cameraman in his contemporary black film Blood Simple. Sonnenfeld also directed other films by the Coen brothers, Raising Arizona and Miller Crossing.
