Roman Gurgenovich Balayan was born in a village called Nerkin Oratag of the Nagorno-Karabakh region of the Azerbaijan SSR on April 15, 1941. The boy lost his father at an early age, he simply disappeared during the Great Patriotic War. The mother worked in the hospital as a doctor and at the same time was engaged in acting in local theater circles.

From 1959 to 1961, Roman worked in the Stepanakert Drama Theater named after M. Gorky as an actor. However, he decided that to continue his career without acting education does not make sense, so in 1961 he left for Armenia and entered the Yerevan Theatre Institute at the director’s faculty. Due to material problems in 1964, he had to temporarily leave his studies, but later he continued his studies, but at the Kyiv Institute of Theater Art named after I. Karpenko-Kary at the Faculty of Cinematography.
Since 1967, Roman Balayan began working as an assistant to director S. Parajanov on the auditions for the film “Kyiv Frescoes”. But this picture was eventually banned and did not appear on the screen. Roman believes that it was thanks to Parajanov that he became a screenwriter, director and actor.
He graduated from the Balayan Institute in 1969, and in 1970 he became a screenwriter and director at the Dovzhenko Film Studio. The first film he worked on was released in 1973 under the title

Then he worked on films.
Fieler "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk County", "Kiss", "Kashtanka" and "Flights in Dreams and Reality". For the last film he was awarded the State Prize of the USSR.
Later, the film “First Love”, “Two Moons, Three Suns”, “Night of Light” was released. In 2006, Roman produced the film.
