Only on this day, Petrenko’s father managed to register him, and since in those years there was strict control over the timely registration of children, Vasily Alekseevich had to lie about the birthday of his son.
This famous actor always gave the impression of a thorough, hardworking man. He had “golden hands” – he was a shepherd, a sailor, and a locksmith, even knew how to make furniture. He was fond of sports, was engaged in boxing and wrestling, from which, on the advice of the head of the drama club, he went to the actors. Alexei twice passed exams at the Kiev Theatre Institute, but failed to do so. In order not to be a burden to his parents, he got a job as a blacksmith. But he did not abandon his desire for an acting career and again submitted his documents to the Theatre Institute, but this time to Kharkiv.
Fateful was the acquaintance of Alexei with theatrical figure Trofim Karpovich Olkhovich, thanks to whom Petrenko himself did. After graduation, Alexey began work in the Shchors Drama Theater in Zaporozhye, later in the Zhdanov Drama Theater. For 4 years he played many roles, but mostly small.
In 1964, Igor Vladimirov invited him to the Leningrad Theater named after Leningrad Leningrad Leningrad Soviet, where he played his first role as a Soldier in the fairy tale “Soldier and Snake”. This role did not bring stunning success, but he did not leave the stage. Amazing acting talent was revealed with each role: “Pushkin in Odessa”, “Crime Punishment”, “Threepenny Opera”, etc.
The first role in the movie Alexei Petrenko played in 1967. Preludes to his famous works were the roles in “King Lear” and the role of a fartman in the film “Day of Sun and Rain”.
