Hawaiian-born James Shigeta first appeared on screen in 1959. After that, he played anyone—Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Tibetan—but not Hawaiian. And his characters became positive or negative depending on how much it was necessary for the director. Shiget became especially famous after he played a romantic role in the film Flower Drum Song in 1961. Shigeta appeared on television quite often, but as a guest star, never working on a regular series.
