John Hillerman was born on December 20, 1932 in Denison, Texas, in the United States, in the family of a gas station owner. His father, Christopher, was the grandson of immigrants from Germany and France, and his mother, Lenora, was the daughter of immigrants from Austria and Germany. After graduation, John Hillerman studied at St. Xavier Academy, and then at the University of Texas at Austin, where he specialized in journalism. Then he went to military service and received the rank of sergeant. All this time he worked with various theater groups, and after leaving the army went to New York to study theater. John Hillerman began his career in professional theater in 1957, and since 1959 he has actively participated in live productions on Broadway. According to critics, the most successful for him was the role of Othello in the production of 1958.
Hillerman made his film debut in 1968, when he starred in the series Mennix and Division 5.0.
