William began his career in high school and became one of the youngest members of the New Haven Long Island Port Theatre troupe. After studying at Pasadena Playhouse and Carnegie Tech, William briefly worked on the New York scene.
In 1972, he played his debut film The New Centurions. He went on to delight critics periodically with elaborate interpretations of second (and sometimes first) roles in films such as The Sugarland Express, The Day of the Locust, and Looking for Mr. Goodbar.
In addition to this, Etherton is active in television, both in films and miniseries. Since the mid-80s, Etherton has played the roles of either bureaucrats or ambitious young people with little indiscriminate means to achieve an end. See the first two parts of "Die Hard".
