Brett studied acting at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London, where he entered in 1951. His acting debut took place in 1954 at the Lybreri Theatre. In London, he first appeared on stage with the Old Vic troupe in 1956. Brett often played characters of classical works.
He appeared on television in 1954, and his first film role was in 1955. He was invited to play leading roles in television series. His work in The Three Musketeers in 1966, where he played D’Artagnan, became very significant.
In 1973, Jeremy played Bassanio in a television production based on Shakespeare's play The Merchant of Venice.
At the beginning of his career, Brett does not often appear in movies. His most memorable work was the role of Nikolai Rostov in War and Peace, and in 1964 – the role of Freddie Ainsward-Hill in the musical.
