Romain Gary is the pseudonym of a French writer and screenwriter of Jewish origin. His real name is Roman Katsev.
The boy was born in the house of his grandfather on the territory of Russia in the city of Vilna on May 8, 1914. Her mother was a provincial actress and her father was a merchant. In 1925, Romain's parents separated, after which the mother took her son to her parents in Poland.
In 1928, the family moved to Nice (France), where their relatives lived. The young man studied in Paris and Aix-en-Provence. Since childhood he was preparing to become a military pilot.
During the Second World War, Roman emigrated to Britain, where he joined the French troops, which were formed by De Gaulle. After the war, Romain Gary returned to France, where he got a job in the diplomatic service, and in 1956 he became head of the French consulate in Los Angeles.
He made his debut as a writer in 1945 with the novella European Education, which immediately brought success to the author. In 1952, Romain published another book, Colors of the Day, and in 1956, the novel Roots of the Sky, which received the Goncourt Brothers Prize.
Then the writer worked on the works “White Dog”, “Europe”, “The Night will be calm”, “Wizards” and others.
In 1960, the autobiographical work “The Promise at Dawn” was published, where the author described his relationship with his mother.
Romain Gary is the only writer in history to have won the Goncourt Brothers Award twice, despite being banned in the prize's charter. However, the second award-winning novel “All Life Ahead” was written under the pseudonym of Emil Azhar. This image he created for “rebirth”, because he was tired of “wearing a mask”.
In December 1980, the great writer shot himself, leaving a suicide note stating that he was depressed. Romain was buried in a military church in the presence of De Gaulle's associates, famous military leaders, politicians and writers.
