Born on October 28, 1896 in St. Petersburg. People's Artist of the USSR (1951). He graduated from drama courses in Petrograd (1920). In 1924-1936 - actor and director of the Leningrad Theatre named after A.S. Pushkin, in 1936-1963 - Kiev Russian Theatre named after Lesya Ukrainka (in 1953-1958 - chief director). In the movies since 1935. He died on September 4, 1963 in Moscow.
