I will not dig into what the film embellished, what was lied, and what was done exactly according to the story, in which almost a former rider and now designer Shelby and almost a designer but still a racer Miles is trying to get out of the turbohole “world of left turns NASCAR” and a powerful sledgehammer blow to the image to make the company “Ford” a new face, losing nose to the Italians in the historically hopeless race “Le Mans”.
The film shocked me warmly - for the first time in my life, I saw the head of the corporation make complaints about low sales of products to the team. Marketing! But if you put the jokes aside, it had grounds - the technique of sales in the United States was all about the image, and the action was in the sixties. That is, naturally in the midst of the film “The Irishman”. To say that the Italians influenced everything is to say nothing. To break the hegemony in the image meant to win in sales, and to seize prestige in cars was an incredible success.
And this success was due to the technical and racing merits of several people. Watching an inseparable pair of enemy friends squeeze everything that is possible and impossible out of a car is a pleasure. No, no, and I want to under the frames of the next increase in the power of the sports car to mumble “pull your ass here, Private Pile”, because otherwise than mockery of the capabilities of the heavy “Ford” it can not be called. And the scene where the confident head of Ford is shown what a new car is capable of is unforgettable - I've watched it probably five times. It is very similar to a similar scene in “Knights of Heaven”, where one arrogant lady is also shown a little how to escape from pursuit on fighter jets, “slightly drowning her slipper.”
And in fact, such good scenes are a complete movie. The synergy of actors, plot and filming is very strong. All this looks exciting and with pleasure. The brain does not affect, no effort does not require - know sit down, get emotions.

Great entertainment movie for the evening. A lot of smiles, a bit of sadness, an exciting story. Not as serious as “Race” about Hunt and Lauda, but not as fantasy as “Days of Thunder” with Tom Cruise.
I can't think of a single argument why this movie shouldn't be seen.
P.S. Most of all, I like to imagine that Matt Damon, who plays the head of Shelby Motors here, is a grown-up Will Hunting, hiding a trick behind a grin, and Christian Bale, who plays the genius racer Ken Miles, is a future grammaton from Equilibrium, who will be deprived of emotions in order to protect society. Then the film generally plays with new colors.
“Ford v Ferrari” in 2020 became one of the contenders for the Academy Award, received excellent ratings IMDb and KinoPoisk, the opinions of film critics. That is, the film as if hung a sign “Look at me”, and I as not a fan of racing sports, but a lover of good cinema, of course, interested in this film.
So about the movie.
It came out expensive and beautiful, starring top actors who, by the way, play perfectly (separately, it is worth noting Bale, who once again for the sake of the film does something unimaginable with his body), race tracks, retro cars. In general, everything is as it should be... But... There was nothing in this movie that really stuck in my heart. Yes, beautiful, yes, well played, but in general it is not catchy.
The main problem for me was the script. It completely lacks some nerve, tension, anticipation of something, the development of some relationship. There is no internal conflict between the main characters.
The film was called Ford vs Ferrari, but the actual showdown was not shown. That is, in the film there are references to him, and even scenes in which pathetic claim that we are Ford, we will do Italians, but somehow all this takes place in the background. In the final race, this confrontation was also not visible, the Ferrari driver (about whom nothing is known at all) showed no fight, and the victory of Ford became obvious long before crossing the finish line.
On the other hand, Byle and Damon’s heroes confronted the corporation system. The movie was called Two Against Ford. The confrontation of the main characters of Ferrari is rather conditional. At the same time, the corporation is shown quite archaic: the director is divorced from the world, vile careerists top managers, talentless designers. At the same time, the top manager is shown so naively and not realistically that one simply does not believe in him.
The main characters of Bale and Damon are also poorly written. If you take Bale, he plays great, but his character is completely devoid of humor and pretentiously serious, even when the situation requires detente. There is no development between the main characters, already at the beginning of the film they become friends and remain so until the end, and therefore at some point it becomes boring to watch them. And even the final denouement does not add tension.
The film also included a storyline on Bale’s family relations with his wife and son, but somehow it turned out indistinct, because there is little time for this and there is no disclosure of it either.
It seems that the producers included too many storylines in this film, the development of which could not be accommodated in standard timekeeping. Perhaps it would have been better if they had left the story only about two friends, but then there would have been no “Ford v Ferrari” and the American viewer (who was guided by the creators) could not get a bullet of pride in the heart.
The easiest way to evaluate analogies, because it becomes clearer where really done at the level, and where the film is not. So, for example, a similar film “Race” went the way of the relationship of the two main characters. And there was a love line, and a nerve between the characters, and their development, and a beautiful ending. “Ford vs Ferrari” was not enough.
It was a good movie, but I won’t watch it again.

It's a great movie. Listing all its advantages, you could write a very impressive article, so I will try to do only the most important.
Narrative and plot:
The picture attracts attention from the beginning and does not let go to the credits (I watched twice in one breath), which is commendable for two and a half hour timekeeping. Not boring dialogues, interesting and spelled characters, great acting, perfectly shot races and an authentic sixties soundtrack contribute to the immersion in the world of confrontation between two great automotive companies.
It is also worth noting that the picture is based on real events. This fact does not give a gulf of interest in the film even after watching it.
Acting game:
Personally, I did not notice that anyone from the caste was out of place, all the actors coped with the task.
Of course, it is impossible not to highlight Christian Bale. So selflessly preparing for the role seems to have become normal for him. If he continues in this vein, he can also be awarded an Oscar for special achievements (I have already lost count of how many times he has drastically changed his weight and physique). In this particular case, he had to lose 30 kg in 7 months!
Operating work:
When the screen shows racing and want to squeeze into the chair and not take your eyes off the screen. Dynamic racing can compete even with top Hollywood action movies.
Bottom line:
As a result, we have a film mandatory to watch people of any age and any hobbies. The picture is instructive, well shot and most importantly interesting!

Starting to write the first lines, you immediately want to put the accents right - "Ford vs Ferrari" is a glossy, but at the same time unleavened candy, shot for the age-old jury handing out prestigious statuettes. Such pictures, telling us about past tragedies or victories of the country, are often filled with a spirit of patriotism, innovation and deprivation. This is pure politics, trying to shoot political (often) or some production thrillers (working on something like in “Spotlight” 2015), the events of which can be quite calmly laid out in thirty minutes of timing.
The story of two people trying to build and upgrade their potentially better car is interrupted by an attempt to suspense with corporate squabbles. Every now and then we see an annoyingly pompous image of the son of Ford, who wants a "great again." And all this leads us to the finale, after the credits of which the viewer is visited by a truly funny epiphany. The whole film tries to dance around political/corporate innuendo while the process of making their best version of the machine is underway, and in reality, it’s all decided by one person. One man capable of squeezing top speed out of a collapsing car. This is not the first time someone has risked their life. And all this understanding is even more amusing - in fact, this picture, like many faceless similar works, does not present us with a bright backbone of history. Here you can see an extraordinary person, but ordinary and interesting - no. If both the main characters were like that in real life, you won’t see it here. The very process of building a story turns into dancing to the tune, into a kind of traveling circus, where they try to keep the viewer’s attention around a banal and boring story. Christian Bale’s character is being fired every now and then, and this cyclicality has an almost symmetrical design until the end of the film. Some stolen stopwatches, again show us the dissatisfied face of the son of Ford. The picture does not even try to arrange as much detail in the narrative as possible - it is simply pointlessly overdue. And in those moments of racing, where it would be possible to catch up even more tension with an authentic soundtrack (hell, even drama), you will hear a very light motif, absolutely not characteristic of a tense race.
The attempt to squeeze tears in the finale is also inorganic, and the attempts associated with this action look almost hypocritical. It would be as if the set was exhausted at the end of the shooting process (if the picture was not shot from the end). And it's got a good crew on it, it's got a great cast. And Christian Bale, even from banal roles, is still able to squeeze juice. Only here the story itself is absolutely stingy in the effect of the narrative, and all attempts to catch up with tension and diversify the story resemble dancing with a diamond around a fire. It’s ridiculous and, frankly, “flagrant.”
Quite a watchable empty space for prestigious film festivals on the next (annual) wave of patriotism. Trying to dance on an uninteresting story. And after all, conventionally the same “Rush” Ron Howard wins from this representative, at least due to the better disclosure of the characters. Of course, everything is not so dull and hopeless as it might seem from the mood of the above lines. Christian Bale’s minutes of racing and a couple of close-ups with his intense facial expressions are by far the best there is. But should we look at it for that?

For some reason, I thought that Ford vs. Ferrari was an incredibly boring movie. Everything from the trailer to the poster screamed that this was typical American historical “propaganda,” saying that America is a great country primarily because of its people, not everything else. What was my surprise when already in the first minutes I realized that I can not take off the screen.
Of course, first of all, the film is based on a plot in which many lines are simultaneously intertwined: here you and the tragedy of the rider who no longer has the opportunity to do what he loves, the financial troubles of a small family, friendly contradictions and intrigues of corporate fatheads who are used to always leaving the last word for themselves. This is all, even if it is crooked, but very interesting, although in fact, the film is certainly not about this. Watching how designers are trying their best to achieve perfection in order for the car to be able to survive 24 hours at incredible speeds, you really begin to take your breath away.
“Ford v Ferrari” tells us about the cruel sport, about how terrible auto racing is and at the same time incredible in its speed and fury.
The more beautiful, against the background of speed and danger, scenes of family comfort look like. Overall, the film was made in an incredibly harmonious way. You want to watch it, because not only one action captures your attention, but everything around you. This is a strange aesthetic, charging you with the strongest emotions that you can imagine.
Christian Bale is always incredible. It was a pleasure to watch him.
“Ford vs Ferrari” is a really exciting picture that looks in one breath.
I really liked the film and exceeded my expectations. Unfortunately, the film failed at the box office - with a budget of almost $ 100 million, the film grossed only slightly more than $ 200 million. I can't understand why most great works fail at the box office. Naturally, the film impressed and amused me. The movie in my subjective opinion is as soulful as the film “Rainy Day in New York”, which was released in the same 2019.
Plot:
American car designer Carroll Shelby and British racing driver Ken Miles, who together challenged corporations and their own demons to create a completely new sports car that could compete with Ferrari at the World Championships held in France in the mid-1960s. The story was fresh, but the damn trailer ruined everything! I found out about the film recently and decided to watch it, but the rental came to an end. I had to wait for good quality and watched the trailer once a week. When I finally saw the film, it seemed too long, because the trailer showed a lot of footage from the end. Sometimes there was a feeling that the heroes stopped fooling around and started the race. But viewing this did not interfere and still in the moments that showed in the trailer, some intrigue was observed.
Main characters:
Between the two characters, the chemistry of their relationship is felt. You can worry about them, because there were many sad moments in their lives associated with racing. Both characters were great and funny. Shelby did a great job in the Ford, and Ken was a great driver and driver. The duet of these guys turned out to be in my opinion the best of what was in the film.
Secondary Heroes:
They may not be as memorable as the main ones, but they are still great! The head of the company Ford as a character is quite funny and charismatic. The enemy in the image of a Ferrari racer (well, who would have thought) is quite strong and tense. Other secondary characters are also good, but they can not be discussed.
Visual:
The cars are very beautiful and look great in the frame thanks to the excellent and fun action, and even the excellent work of the operator. As far as I know, everything was shot live and without the use of special effects, which is a huge plus for the film 2019. It makes no sense to find fault with him, everything is done well with high quality and juicy.
Atmosphere:
I haven’t written about it in my reviews in a long time. But the authors brilliantly conveyed the atmosphere of the 60s. All these cars, houses and other interiors refresh the narrative in the film.
Soundtrack:
You can be proud of him too. The melodies are organically woven into the film, there is not a single superfluous melody, but through the frenzy of stunning songs, the film in my opinion was not.
Bottom line: this is a great entertaining movie that I recommend to everyone. The plot is quite fresh, a great visual component, the atmosphere of the 60s, cool soundtracks and many more things juicy, in some ages I was really left without flaws happy with the film and even do not want to find fault.

One of the key scenes of a big race movie takes place in a typical roadside diner. It's just that this picture is as much about fast machines as Man on the Moon is about space rockets. In fact, it’s a production drama about geniuses who are willing to give up anything to achieve their dreams. However, this does not prevent us from additionally enjoying the speed, growl of engines and adrenaline on the big screen.
Ford suffers a reputational loss - the new generation does not want to buy dull conveyor cars. At one of the countless meetings, it is suggested to boldly remind a young audience about themselves. Win an exhausting race with the talking title "24 Hours of Le Mans". For many years, the championship has been held by the Ferrari family contract, and several months before the start, but corporate resources are not limited. There is always something that money cannot buy.
The American stereotype, which has been diligently maintained, is a nation of daring innovators, dreamers, discoverers. Those who do everything with their talent and strength.
That's what Shelby (Matt Damon) looks like. A cowboy who has bounced his way long ago knows all about the burrow of horses. Inventive, straightforward and savvy, shirt-guy. The race car is still in the prototype stage, but he already knows it will require the perfect pilot.
It's a pity Ken Maisle isn't perfect at all. Arrogant and arrogant, he demolishes any obstacle, squeezes the maximum out of the mechanisms, scores on safety, does not regret himself. Christian Bale didn’t just physically fit into the car right after the role of big Dick Cheney, he was born in a car. His character resembles a boxer from the movie "Fighter". A man dried up by a dream, ready to fight anyone who takes it. Most importantly, it is like litmus test for any corporate pretense.
And here we come back to the main topic. “Ford vs. Ferrari” is a film about how complex capitalist mechanisms kill the American dream, average abilities, and bring managers and advisers to the forefront. If you expect to see a standard biopic, the movie will surprise you with its twists and turns. The movie is like a car with a 7,000-speed engine. At such moments, the car seems weightless and the track is deceptively familiar.
The undeniable advantage of films like Ford vs. Ferrari is that they give an initial understanding of the phenomenon they are talking about, a kind of push base about the subject, quite hidden from the ordinary viewer. And motorsport is just such a phenomenon, it has never had the glory of football, boxing, ice hockey, remaining by unspoken rule an elite activity for the entertainment and dreams of the rich, as unwittingly discussed in Howard Race. It is not surprising, because just look at the conditional Grand Prix of Formula 1 and see a couple of car brands to feel the all-powerful marketing, the power of money. It seems that the new film by James Mangold was also not without sponsorship from concerns, manufacturers of spare parts and tires: the title contains two legendary brands, the inclusion of which could be painlessly avoided. However, Ford v Ferrari does not aggressively impose product placement. Without it, the film is not presented at all, the logos of Dunlop, Good Year and other manufacturers on banners are the most important paraphernalia that create a clearly expressed setting of the motorsport world.
However, to convey the atmosphere of ancient times, when the world did not know either Niki Lauda, Ayrton Senna, or Michael Schumacher. Not enough tabloids. It is important to plunge into the era with a head in order to reliably demonstrate times, due to technical imperfections, not transmitted as authentically as possible by television then. And Mangold succeeded, and even with overfulfillment. All these racing circuits, tracks, highways, sandy and dirty roads, wrenches, pit stops with mechanics, concerns, exhibitions, cars - it seems to be standard things, but damn juicy. And when the pilots sit in the old sports cars enclosed with a frame, start the engines, press into the gas and start weaving clubs of sand with their wheels, along with their greasy and soot-lined faces emotionally expressing natural excitement with the desire to win at any cost, then the cinema begins to express a genuine spirit of victory. The races themselves are sprawling with drive and delight, if only because for the 1960s, speeds under 400 kilometers per hour seem unthinkable. But the designers were able to build such engines, and people were able to carry them, adapt to dangerous conditions and overloads. In fact, the film shows a cult era in the history of motorsport, when there were radical changes in engineering and sports thought, the confrontation of the greatest brands became a war, which makes the name justified.
Carroll Shelby, for health reasons not able to compete, at the invitation of the Ford company and under the patronage of manager Lee Iacocca begins, following the example of Enzo Ferrari, to create the best car, which has no analogues. And suddenly found himself stranded Ken Miles, realizing that helping a friend and at the same time the opportunity to earn, provide for a family, takes to test the future GT40. It is Miles, to get into the dry skin of which Christian Bale once again lost weight, will become a key participant in the upcoming bureaucratic and road fights. A survivor who has seen any war veteran, "on a tank entered Berlin", Ken kills two birds with one stone - and the family provides, and quenches the thirst for speed, finds the very moment when the dream comes into contact with the benefits. He turned out to be an obsessed idealist, striving to find the best technical features on the so far lame prototype, turning circles all day on a specially built track. The machine must destroy the rivals, so that they swallow the dust and look into the back of the majesty carried away. Miles knows that he will do everything for this, albeit externally remains extremely calm, and the gutta-percha character will spill out into the direction of detractors later. Amazing level of composure, intelligence and hot determination, not every athlete it is given.
And the evil corporate hari are trying to eliminate Miles, who once said a harsh word. “He’s a bull, he’s not listed as representing Ford, so he’s not needed.” In fact, this formulation of the drama contains the main puncture of the film. Quite everyday, according to the patterns of inspiring, but old stories, Mangold tries to prevent the figure of Miles from coming to the goal. The fact that there are chief scumbags under the guise of Vice-President Leo Bibi, the dangerous financial status of the family and the bravado campaign of the main character through the thorns to the stars - it is... too busy. The director demonstrates a very well-assembled movie filled with the notorious cocktail of voluminous pathos and aspiration, as if once again retelling the story of Rocky Balboa of some kind. Mangold is afraid of departing from the norms told in film school, which makes Ford vs Ferrari too typical. For sports dramas so especially, it is enough to recall “Million Dollar Baby” or, by the way, about cycling races “Getting Away”. It is enough to have the slightest idea of the construction of the picture overcoming, and the film will show teeth, it will become visible, it will become predictable to the point. Except that the ending is unexpected, along with the historical context. The problem is that the movie does not require any tragedy. It should not put pressure on the feeling of vulnerability, they say that Miles is unfairly treated, and even more so on tears, but tries. It should not present the third-party participants of the events as bastards, but tries and even quite performs it - Leo Bibi really turned out to be a very toxic and unpleasant type, although he did not do much in his life, and the younger Henry Ford is caricatured and does not cause anything - neither good nor negative. The reality is that the history of the Ford-Ferrari standoff took little expressionism and a lot of work, really hard and capacious. And why the director did not prefer to show more details instead of Shakespeare games is unclear. It seems that it would be more valuable for both content and timekeeping, despite wasted scenes looking balanced.
At the same time, the understanding that the film is not about squabbles behind boxes is present - a film about sports. About the drama of overcoming all difficulties on the way to perfection and peaks with accompanying psychology. Friendship after all. The way Shelby treats Ken speaks and reveals him. He doesn't leave, he doesn't leave a friend, and so on. And if such features even look standard, they do not spoil the tape and endow it with the necessary charm along with the racing theme. Mangold clearly attracted people who became interested in motorsport after watching it. At least some nuances have become clearer. And the era unexpectedly surprised, as well as the leitmotif with attention not to fashionable street racers, but to professional sports, in principle not very popular in modern culture, and even aged without hip-hop, techno and heavy rock - incredible!

Movies about racing are not so common, even rarer among them are expensive blockbusters with the participation of famous filmmakers. And when they finally appear, the category of viewers in whose field of interest fall both hobbies - and cinema and motorsport - invariably orgasm, looking to holes familiar stories on their screens. The average person can objectively assess the advantages and disadvantages, which will be discussed below.
Undoubted advantages: excellent shooting, a balance between the description of the technical features of sports cars, human relationships and, in fact, races, as well as casts.
As a result, even a complete profane in motorsport can feel, if not a pilot, then, in extreme cases, close to this sport - the film is filled with specific terms and descriptions just as much as it is necessary for a film about auto racing. It does not bother or distract, for which I thank the creators.
About caste - finally again strong center role Bale: wayward eccentric, a real professional, loving husband, Billionaire, playboy, philanthropist... In short, there's a place to turn around and a great actor is doing just fine, as expected. And, in general, everything in the film in their places, I do not want to find fault.
Of course, willy-nilly, the film compares to 2013's Race. Entourage, environment - yes, it all looks like. But movies are about different things. There is a story of rivalry and mutual respect, here - more about support, priorities, big and small people, about the forest and chips.
The bewilderment was caused by the very beginning of the film - a dispute that arose between, in fact, the heads of two automakers. Not being a great connoisseur in this field, I was surprised by the very topic of controversy - word for word, and now experienced managers and respected rich people call each other a pasta and a man unworthy of his grandfather. All the further essence of the film comes from this fact, and if you think carefully, it looks quite ridiculous, about like shooting a fly from a cannon. I can't say anything about historical accuracy.
The film is slow, but it comes from the very essence of the competition - the race, after all, for 24 hours. There may be a lack of drama and intensity, but that stems from the historical facts on which the film is based. Not perfect, but strong enough sports drama with good actors and a bright visual component – not often do we enjoy such? Here we go. So, everyone watch.
Here's the picture you didn't expect to see in the Oscar race. A sports drama about racing.
And most amazingly, it's just a movie. Without innovation and directing chips, just a good movie. Why not? So Mangold decided to take the history of the struggle of Ford against Ferrari in the racing industry. About the friendship of Ken Miles and Carol Shelby, real geniuses of their business.
Almost any such “ballad about the struggle” can become in skillful hands as a triumphant of all festivals at once (" Million Dollar Baby) and an ordinary film. Here’s Ford vs Ferrari stuck somewhere in between.
His story and the beautiful duet of Christian Bale and Matt Damon make the picture truly strong. One that you want to review. This is a classic sports drama.
Ford vs Ferrari have a certain knowledge, great plans, but unfortunately it all looks standard. Do you need any innovative techniques in a simple biographical drama? I think not. Quite an interesting and heartfelt story. This is what Ford and Ferrari have.
The story of years gone by and the most severe race in the world, which lasts exactly a day.
If you like roaring cars and stories about overcoming, then this is definitely your movie.
For the past five or seven years, I have been apprehensively gazing at paintings cherished by critics and academics. Because the ghost of scripted moronicity is actively walking around the studio pavilions. But for the project “Ford v Ferrari” I was calm. And quite naturally regretted that he did not bring his handful of dollars into the piggy bank of the picture, having watched it at home.
“Ford vs Ferrari” is a mustwatch of modern cinema. Yes, I have a weakness for sports biopics, but Ron Howard’s Race position seemed unshakable to me. It seemed. To be frank, today’s tape took the lead simply because the duo of Bale and Damon seemed to me brighter than the on-screen confrontation between Hemsworth and Bruhl.
But you have to understand that this movie is not great because of the benefits of two insanely talented actors. Their skill is at the same time the foundation and decoration, between which is comfortably located an incredible symbiosis of humor, drama, tension, camera work and all that we love the greatest art.
Of course, Mangold’s work will keep you on screen from the first to the last second. And in the last fifteen minutes you will be glad that you do not watch it standing up - it is already too difficult to resist and not lose ground under your feet. The creators provided the audience with a real attraction in the form of an emotional swing.
In general, safely allocate two and a half hours of your own time and start watching. And do it with a volley method, although otherwise is unlikely.
I think few people will argue with the fact that James Mangold can be safely called one of the most talented and multifaceted directors of modern cinema, perfectly “feeling” in every genre, for which he only does not take up. Like a romantic melodrama in the case of Intuition, a detective thriller in the case of Identity, a western in the case of Train to Yuma and much more. This time again returning to such a native genre of biopic and in my opinion shot one of the best films of the past year.
This film directed by James Mangold tells the story of the relationship and strong friendship of the famous American automotive designer Carroll Shelby and the brave British racer Ken Miles, who were hired by the management of the Ford Motor Concert in order to create the fastest car in the world and outfit the repeated Ferrari champion at the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans race in the mid-60s.
When viewing this tape, the first thing that strikes the eye is how responsible and respectful the authors of this tape approached the story of car designer Carroll Shelby, racer Ken Miles and their creative union. Albeit briefly, but with maximum accuracy and biographically correct telling the story of the amazing events that occurred in the mid-60s, which forever inscribed the story of Shelby and Miles in world history, losing the nose of Ferrari, who did not know at that time. At the same time, it is on the example of courage, perseverance, uncompromising and principled Shelby and Miles and laying the main morality of the picture that nothing is impossible in this life and you can achieve everything. It is only necessary not to listen to the opinions of others and allow them to label you about your capabilities, sincerely want and rise even after every hard blow of fate.
The director of this film James Mangold has certainly shot one of the best films of the past year. Structurally, this film directed by James Mangold is not much different from other biopics in the manner of narrative. But despite this, Mangold managed to turn the conversational drama into a very energetic, dynamic and truly exciting film, which literally blows adrenaline and the smell of gasoline. Allowing you to watch the film in one breath and feel like no observer, as a direct participant in screen events in their epicenter and achieving this not only in the exciting filmed scenes of car racing.
At different times, Tom Cruise, Leonardo DiCaprio and several other actors claimed the main roles in this film. But it is the appointment of Matt Damon and Christina Bale that I personally consider the main gem of this tape. Both actors demonstrated a powerful game and one hundred percent hit in the image. Especially Bale, who again sacrificed his health for the sake of the role and demonstrates complete dissolution in the image at the level of gestures, facial expressions, manners of speaking and just body language. It is a pity that such a strong performance of both actors flew past the nominations and awards of numerous prestigious awards. Including Oscar. It is impossible not to note the equally worthy game of Noah Jupe, Katrina Balfe, John Bernthal, Tracy Letts and Josh Lucas. Especially good is Lucas, who appeared in the usual role of another scoundrel and looked so convincing that he repeatedly wanted to strangle him with his own hand.
10 out of 10
Ford vs Ferrari is definitely one of the best movies of the past year and one of the best biopics of the last decade. The director of this film, James Mangold, managed to turn the conversational drama into a very dynamic, energetic, exciting, holding in continuous tension and a state of fading heart, a film with the stunning performance of Christian Bale and Matt Damon, which undeservedly flew past numerous nominations and awards of prestigious awards.
The film accelerates slowly and slowly, so slowly and so slowly in combination with a ridiculous and poorly staged and played drama that you begin to miss. Even the thought slips, not whether to stop it all. Saves the first serious race and impeccable cameraman's strong work. Only then do you begin to realize that Christian Bale with his eagle nose is not only created to scare bandits, but also sits in the pilot chair as infused, and Matt Damon is a salesman and a dealmaker from God.
The film is long, there is a lot of Hollywood, in the bad sense of the word, sometimes it is inappropriate and kills the emotional background, as for excessive diligence and mechanical typewriter you do not see the soul, and there is no chemistry between the main characters as friends, accomplices of one idea and faith, and family values are plastic and played unconvincingly. One Mr. Ford is very imposing with his gang of ever-hungry jackals and adds fire like crackers and horseradish.
A boring movie with an immoral appeal – do as your boss tells you, even if it’s wrong. First, the immoral behavior of the main character is not blamed. He can easily swear, shout, throw heavy tools at people. Second, the cult of money and social recognition. For the sake of work, heroes are ready to sacrifice their principles and honor. Thirdly, the egoism of the hero is off the scale. The king of the car service. He does what he wants. And fourth, depressive moods occur.
Is that what this is all about? For money and recognition. How? Did it help?
The whole movie is one big advertisement. Primitive PR of 2 companies: Ford and Ferrari. For the film attracted famous actors to advertise trademarks. When it comes to racing, I recommend the fastest Indian. But it's not all that good.
Fragment in 21 minutes. Look at this dialogue. Do you know why people put such emphasis on time, pauses, tears? To pressure a person. This is normal emotional manipulation. A normal person asks without any pauses and pressing questions: “Honey, are we in trouble?” What shall we do?” That's all. Nothing superfluous. Notice, in the 25th minute, the wife began to persuade her husband not to quit the race. Why? Isn't that crazy? Since she realizes they don't have money, why would she suggest a delusional idea? You know why? So that she didn’t accidentally arrive: You sawed me. You talked me out of it. Insurance, in a word. Clever.
If you don’t know who emotional manipulators are, that’s right. An emotional manipulator uses guilt to control the other person. They find an emotional Achilles heel and hit it until you are cornered, which is what the wife of the main character does: You said that in 2 years we will have savings, and they still do not, and in general we have everything worse. I'll cry! And then he starts talking about not giving up racing... well, you get it.
By the way, why does she support racing at all? In general, why? After all, for a husband, a normal goal is to create a strong, healthy family, raise children (the first 5 years are mother’s worries, and then the father gives the core, the basis, will, courage), and also devote time to his wife (since she also needs the core, support and direction). Playing with cars is a child's wish. Winning the race is nothing for society. It's just fun and making money. But talking to your family, helping your wife through some unpleasant moments from the past, explaining something, supporting – this is much more important than racing. What the main character does not do at all. He's racing and his family is the background. Talking heart-to-heart is for weaklings, apparently, so he thinks.

The sports film format is said to work best when it tells a story based on real events. Director James Mangold, to be honest, was far from the real world: take at least his successes in the X-Men universe. However, in the case of Ford v Ferrari, the director managed to open an almost new cinematic film - if only because driving a racing car from the point of view of the driver's car is not cinematic. Recognising this film, as well as paying homage to the prototypes of the characters in the film, Mangold managed to create one of the most spectacular projects of 2019. Moreover, the director created not so much one of the main films about racing, but a tricky comment on today’s realities: two strong men desperately try to do their job while they are hampered by corporate overlords.
Henry Ford II entered into a racing rivalry with Enzo Ferrari himself. The culmination of this was the confrontation between the two car giants at the 24 Hours of Le Mans race. Faced with strong competitors in the face of Ferrari, the millionaire instructs Lee Iacocca (the famous manager of the company, who has quite a curious biography; it is a pity his story has not yet been adapted) to hire former Le Mans winner Carroll Shelby to develop the world’s best racing car. The Shelby team includes an outstanding but difficult to communicate racer Ken Miles. Miles immediately angers the authorities, so Shelby has to stand up for a friend and sometimes make difficult choices.
Mangold takes "F vs. F" out of the uncomplicated genre film zone. There are still “training montage” moments in which participants are preparing for a big competition, but first of all the script here reveals personalities. The culmination here is very unconventional, especially if you do not get acquainted with the details of those historical events in advance, and you can even draw your own conclusions. It’s even curious that the film is called Ford vs Ferrari, although very little is said about the latter, but even in those moments in which the Ferrari team is shown, they want to empathize. Of course, this is more a confrontation of two ways of doing business, but Mangold cleverly weaves this into a sports film without sacrificing the integrity of its main elements.
In general, the film is based on acting. She's great here. The role of Matt Damon may not be as spectacular as others in his career, but he gets a significant chunk of the emotional scenes. His character is the plot engine. Bale also lost the weight he gained for Power, and was able to convey emotions even in a helmet and sunglasses.
“Ford vs. Ferrari” has, of course, a small drawback: the picture has a problem with stimulating attention. While motorists will delight in the individual scenes, it seems that the film delves too much into the minutiae about designing or driving a car. And despite the fact that the racing scenes are made tense with enough first-person footage giving the illusion of being on the track, there are too many dead plot points between them.
An exciting racing film may be delayed in some places, but in general, the film manages to maintain a good pace, paying more attention to spectacular moments than trying to be important and smart. The plot here is simple and classic, so it is surprising that the story was not filmed in the 60s - just at the time the film is set. But old-fashionedness is presented here in the best form. At the heart of Ford v Ferrari is still the history of racing, as well as the touching friendship that occupies a central place here. The basic morality of this relationship has remained unspoken, but it is easy to read: to be a leader does not mean to be a winner, and vice versa. Love your cars!
Do you want to make a car that can overtake a Ferrari from a Ford? ?
I will start my review without any prefaces, just like Ferrari starts. Or... Charged Ford!
So, the first thing I noticed from the beginning of the film (and it’s the first thing I liked) is the visual component. Very beautiful and expensive picture! That’s exactly what it’s supposed to be in a $100 million movie with that cast. And immediately after this remarkable detail, I noticed the second, very important component - style. Oh yes! From the eye-catching chic cars of the 60s (I especially liked the everyday apparatus of Carroll Shelby), to the costumes of Ford managers, in this film - everything is in style! This is the list of strengths of the film is just beginning! By and large, I didn’t notice any weaknesses, and I liked almost everything, except for a few little things that are hardly worth mentioning. Thought... Nope! Stop! Life is made up of little things. And since I am talking about the merits of this film, it is worth mentioning the shortcomings, albeit minor, as well as few (there are only two). 1) Moments when riders look at each other when overtaking. I doubt that in real life people would do this, carrying in a piece of metal at a speed of over 250 km / h. Typical display. I think we could have done without her. And 2) Henry Ford II in one of the episodes tells Carol Shelby that the 2nd World War was won not by the Americans (I seem to have long been used to hearing this in the movies, but still infuriates), but by Ford! Circus! Oh, come on. After all, the disadvantages end there! And I will continue to praise this picture:
Director James Mangold is no stranger and knows his business. It's a good movie. No "pruning" and extra "water". Do not take away, do not add.
Operator Fidon Papamichael, inspired by such films as “Le Mans” and “Grand Prix” also worked hurriedly. The scenes of the race, like the whole movie, look very good.
As for acting, I have no complaints here either. And despite what I would call a “two-actor theater” movie, the secondary characters were pretty good. Especially Josh Lucas' character, Ford senior vice president Leo Bibi. Sometimes I wanted to strangle that rat boy! And that says a lot. I also liked Enzo Ferrari and Ken Miles' wife Molly.
Well, the duo of the main characters in the person of Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) and Ken Miles (Christian Bale) perfectly managed, in my opinion, to convey the atmosphere of confrontation between two people obsessed with their work with group corporate thinking, focused only on profit and reputation.
And in general, the filmmakers approached their work very responsibly. The sons of famous racing drivers of the time, who played their fathers, were invited. The consultants were the people involved in the events shown in the film, and several cars, including the Ford GT40 MKI, were original.
The result was a strong sports drama, which was really interesting to watch.

P.S. The beauty of the Ferrari Ford will never catch up!
I had high hopes for the film, as I saw a lot of positive reviews. For many moviegoers, the picture took its place in the tops of the best tapes of the past year.
As the name implies, the plot tells the real story of the confrontation, and even the formation of two automotive giants such as Ford and Ferrari. In the 60s, they represented the success of the automotive industry. If Ford positioned itself as a brand for the people, then the Italian stallions of the Ferrari brand represented luxury and elitism in those days. The Americans did not want to tolerate this, so they decided to give everyone a light and build the fastest sports car that can win the main race of the planet - the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
There are no plot delights and original moves in the film. Everything is done according to the classics of the genre, but extremely good. There is a cool rider in the past who has quit with a taxi, and there is a certain motivator who tries in every possible way to wake up the sleeping past in him. The film’s two-and-a-half-hour timeline seems to fill the gap in the genre of racing adventure films that has formed since Ron Howard’s Race. Alas and ah, Fast and Furious does not fill this gap in any way.
Acting work fell on the shoulders of such mastodons as Christian Bale and Matt Damon. By the way, both have already received an Oscar for their talent, so in terms of expressing emotions and actions in the frame, there are no questions for them. Also worth noting is John Bernthal and Josh Lucas.
Technically, there is no need to complain about the picture either. The races are great. The cars of that time are incredibly beautiful and luxurious. The sound of the engines stunningly conveys the very atmosphere of track racing. In general, the film seemed to me extremely atmospheric. My love for the United States of America in those years.
And yet, to call the film outstanding and magnificent, I personally lacked something. Maybe the story did not touch one hundred percent. Somewhere the characters did not open up to the end. Or maybe the history of car battles is far from me and I am far from it. But I definitely rank the film among the best works of last year. I recommend it to all those who, like me, missed it in theaters.

About what? As the name suggests. The film is about the competition of the two largest car studios. Henry Ford set the task for his engineers to create an impossible car that will win the Le Mann 24 race and take away the victory from Ferrari, which is firmly established in the first place. His engineers successfully failed the task and it was decided to turn to the famous Carroll Shelby, rider and creator of the Shelby American team. Carl and his best rider, the eccentric Ken Miles, create the Ford GT40 Mk I in the shortest possible time. The car turned out to be problematic and was already finished in the process of racing and the team was able to defeat King Lehmann 24, Ferari's company. A film about the relationship between Shelby (Damon) and Miles (Bale). Ken was a genius racer and mechanic at the same time, a rare combination. But he was also very difficult to communicate with a man obsessed with his work. He was not interested in the ambitions of the leadership and its decisions, only victory. It was very difficult for Shelby to defend him in front of the management who were looking for loyal, not brilliant riders. But his faith in Miles overcame everything.
The movie is a lot about it, there's a competition of car giants and marketing decisions, and it's fascinating in its own way. The film looks easy and exciting. But that's not why it's worth watching. The film is about racing, shot just fine and conveys the atmosphere of racing tracks. This is a very cool motivating film about how obsession with an idea can move mountains. To win where it would seem impossible to get ahead, you need not dry marketing moves, but passion and faith in what you do. A 7000 turns will overcome all obstacles
For who? Lost faith in themselves.
Ferrari. What associations do we have in our heads, what pictures run before our eyes when we hear this word? Bright red car, perfect shapes, where all the nuts in their places, every detail is thought out to the smallest detail, with hundreds of horsepower under the hood and unruly “mustang” logo. When such a marvel of engineering passes by, we basically turn around, we look at it, we take our breath away for a moment. The car, of course, symbolizes speed, success, victory. Machine for the soul and true connoisseurs, I am not afraid of this word, art.
What about Ford? In the 60s, it was a high-quality, good and reliable car that is ready to serve its owner for thousands of kilometers. A car that almost everyone in the country can afford. On it, a conscientious employee traveled to work every day. On the weekend he took his family, and went to do a barbecue in nature.
Henry Ford and Enzo Ferrari are two geniuses in the automotive industry. However, they saw the world of machines in their own way. Ford grew up in an industrialized country that drove world progress. From an early age, he was technically on the “you” and became exactly this person who made it possible for each of us to quickly move from point A to point B. He saw a society where everyone could afford quality transportation at an affordable price. Henry’s goal was to create a car for every day. On the other hand, we are a native of Italy, a country where the sun shines brighter. Enzo Ferrari as Michelangelo in the world of cars. He didn’t have to reinvent it all over again, but he was able to put his word into the world of cars that we all know today. For the Italian engineer, it was not just a means of transportation, not just an uncouth pile of metal with wheels. It was an opportunity to realize my fantasies. Holding a “tap” in his hands, he gave it a shape, added colors, made it special, recognizable and, most importantly, unique. Not everyone can afford it, but everyone will want it. The owner of such a car is undoubtedly a person who has tasted success and victory, and is not ashamed to show it to others. Both companies took their place in the market, and each found its connoisseurs.
And all this went on, if not hurt the personal feelings of the grandson of the father of cars – Henry Ford II, which prompt him to prove to the world and Enzo himself – Ford Corporation also knows how to build fast cars. The American company challenges the leader of the world of racing – the Ferrari team. The film introduces us to Carroll Shelby, a car racer, engineer and designer who is well known for his contribution to the development of Ford, namely the development of the legendary Ford Mustang based on the Shelby GT350 and GT500. The Shelby team has a second protagonist, Ken Miles. One of them is a calm and persistent person who is always ready to compromise. It is easy to find a common language with people, a great leader and expert in his field, clearly knows what he wants from life. The second is the best rider in the team, but a person with a difficult character, which is always not sweet. He feels the car perfectly, sees every flaw and strength of the car. An unwavering rebel would rather lose everything than change his principles. Shelby and Miles are very different, but they had one thing in common: a passion for cars. They complement each other perfectly, which gives us a decent team that can challenge the Italians.
The film is easy and easy to watch, despite the timing is much more than average. High speeds, a moat of engines, male rivalry fill the picture with drive. Cars, like rockets, run in circles for 24 hours to the roar of the stands and the cries of commentators. Here is the friendship of two true connoisseurs of iron horses, strength of spirit, faith in victory. The film teaches you to achieve your goal despite the sticks in the wheels. The main thing is not victory, but participation. The picture reminded me of Ron Howard’s robot Race (2013), but there the author managed to touch the deepest feelings of the viewer, make them empathize with both positive characters and negative ones (in truth, there were no bad guys there). Here, I did not have any emotions or feelings for the main characters. They are good guys, but I never had time to fall in love with 150 minutes of screen time. Yes, it’s a story, but to me, the creators of Ford v Ferrari were trying too hard to scoop up as many viewers and their tastes as possible – something neutral came out. I don’t know why you should throw any negatives on the European team. They, like Shelby and their guys, wanted to win and did everything they could. In general, a good movie, will appeal to connoisseurs of cars, lovers of speed, or people who care just not a bad picture for the evening.

The film focuses on a really important aspect of American history. Racing is in many ways a lifestyle and the main event in the life of ordinary residents. They have been a part of this culture since childhood.
And the film shows this, the attitude of the main characters to their work. Carroll Shelby and racer Ken Miles, the people who live by racing and the cars. These two are the main reasons to watch the movie.
Of course, there are many entertaining and even amazing things in the film, such as:
Henry Ford II himself, an eccentric, bombastic and power-hungry man who put a significant amount of money and his reputation on the line.
The confrontation between two completely different companies. With a different approach, a vision of the world and the main feeling of racing. If for Ford victory in town racing was comparable to taking the victory of a lifetime, then for Ferrari only the first place at Le Mans matters, and the rest is so, stupidity.
Phenomenal for me personally, the manner of shooting, the approach to shooting, especially during the race, when it feels like you are in this event. What about locations and costumes, secondary actors, especially John Bernthal, who plays a narcissistic marketer and discovers himself from the other side of acting.
But still it is the characters played by Matt Damon and Christian Bale the main asset of this film. Their synergy, energy coming from each and most importantly, the feeling that they really burn racing as well as their heroes, this is what bribes the viewer and falls in love with these images until the end of the film.
Of course, this is not a masterpiece of cinema, but it is not a Hollywood carousel, it is something in between. A movie where you can sit down, think and smile.
I think this is a wonderful film about the confrontation between creator and system.
On the one hand, the giant car market Ford with a huge bureaucracy, board of directors and the most unified production, where people, like robots, create mass cars. And this system, fighting for survival, decides to resort to a spectacular publicity stunt: win the race, beating the Ferrari team, where each car is almost manually assembled and is a work of art.
For these purposes, Ford hires two creators and experts in his field: mechanic and former racer Carroll Shelby and racer Ken Miles. And these two are on the other side of the barricades. It’s not enough for them to just design a cool car and put a skilled pilot in it, they also need to submit their decisions to the Ford board in such a way as to get the go-ahead. And this is very, very difficult, in a situation where the government at the top has all its views.
Like any good film, it is primarily about people and their characters, about friendship, competition and life priorities. And that’s why it’s worth seeing.
All I can say is that Christian Bale has played a great role. The races themselves are simultaneously beautiful and boring. The plot twists and turns replace each other, maintaining a given pace of plot development.
Ford vs. Ferrari is not about racing or the rivalry of two car companies, but about overcoming the difficulties faced by people who just want to do their job. The picture is based on real events, and therefore all events seem even more important and interesting.
The film tells the story of car mechanic Carolle Shelby and racer Ken Miles, hired by Ford to beat Ferrari during the legendary Le Mans race. The main roles were magnificently played by Matt Damon and Christian Bale, you fall in love with their characters instantly, so during the races you literally pressed into the chair and biting your nails, sincerely hoping for the success of the characters.
The main force opposing the heroes is the system, the bureaucracy of large corporations. A system in which decisions are made by middle-aged men in suits who have never been in a racing car.
By the way, the races themselves were removed at the highest level. Cinematography, editing, soundtrack everything in its place and does not distract from the race. As I watched it, I literally felt the exhaustion of Le Mans 24 Hours. The cherry on the cake is a beautifully conveyed atmosphere of the 60s.
For me, Ford vs Ferrari is a good movie, a quality attraction.
I recommend you watch it all.
There is a moment at seven thousand revolutions when everything is lost. The machine becomes weightless, just disappears, and there is only a body rushing through space and time... and you hear the question, the only important question: Who are you?
The discussion of the film “Ford vs. Ferrari” directed by James Mangold, known to us for such action films as “Train to Yuma”, “Breaking the Line”, “Logan”, does not subside until now, although “Ford vs. Ferrari” is at the box office not for the first day, and no wonder. Mangold’s new film is not just a biopic about Ken Miles, a man-legend, or a film about the struggle of two car tycoons — Ford and Ferrari — for influence. This is a film about the struggle of ideas, the human factor, the ability to fight and win, even despite internal corporate intrigues.
The film is based on the real-life events that E. J. Bame described in his book “Run Hard: Ford, Ferrari and Their Battle for Speed and Glory at Le Mans” and can be divided into two parts, where the first, in fact, is the plot that prepares the second. This is the story of the friendship of the outstanding American racer and automotive designer Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon), the winner of the 1959 Le Mans race, with the no less legendary British racer and genius designer Ken Miles (Christian Bale), who joined the Ford team, led by Shelby, as a pilot in the race 24 hours of Le Mans in 1966. This is where the extremely sharp in our box office title “Ford vs Ferrari” will be justified.
Of course, each of the characters is a bright personality, with his own character and his “skeletons in the closet”, they find it difficult to accept some things, but it is they who will create a new sports car for the Ford Corporation. And although Shelby can not participate in races for health reasons, and Ken is persistent and uncompromising, but in their tandem they can achieve a lot, because they have the main thing - great experience in such competitions and understand the language of the machine, especially Miles, which senses the possibilities, resources of the sporcar and talks with the car as with a living one.
For fans of racing and fans of adrenaline, the second part of the film is of exceptional interest, because it is a solid drive - a 24-hour race at Le Mans in 1966, in which Ford for the first time put up against Ferrari, traditionally occupying first place in these international competitions, a competitive model of the new racing car - Ford GT40.
However, it cannot be said that the plot of the film is aimed at only one sporting theme: it sensitively combines elements of production drama and human / family values with humor, excitement and drive, why it can be interesting for a wide range of viewers. In addition, the film is beautiful to shoot technically and visually, especially capturing scenes of car racing, when there is a real sense of speed bordering on flight, here we must pay tribute to the operator Fidon Papamichael.
Christian Bale and Matt Damon merged in the film into an amazing duet, between the characters of which there is chemistry, where each balances the other. They are forced to learn to take a hit against the bureaucracy of the company, especially in the person of the top manager of the Ford Corporation – Leo Bibi. But once again, I was struck by Christian Bale not only by his talent and masterful entry into the role of an obstinate, but also by a brilliant racer and designer: how much his gait, movements, speech, even composition changed, especially compared to the role of Vice President Dick Cheney in the movie Power. Bravo, Christian!
In conclusion, I can say that being an exceptionally spectacular, entertaining movie, Ford vs Ferrari is at the same time a very American film about the victory of dreams, when no forces can stop you if you persistently go to the goal. Which at the same time does not prevent it from being a film aimed at “Oscar”, but then the drama of the sports race will compete with “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” by Quentin Tarantino, “The Irishman” by Martin Scorsese, “Marriage Story” by Noah Baumbuck, “Joker” by Todd Phillips and other films, that’s where we will see the sports intensity in the fight for victory!
Have a good view!
I just watched Ford vs. Ferrari.
If we talk about the good, then the film is definitely wonderful action scenes of car racing. I would say that’s the best part of the movie. Wild speed, tension, thundering engines, pungent smoke from tire rubber, rushing at great speed to meet the trees, stones – all this is more than ever well depicted, none of the films I have seen before about cars could reach such a level. I also liked the variety of technical terms. It is these little things that create the depth of the work that make the viewer understand that on the screen there are not the next feeble-minded pitches from famous car fighters, but people who understand their work, because of which the atmosphere of the film is noticeably transformed.
But it's about the good. You have to talk about the bad longer.
There were a lot of things in the movie that were necessary. Which could be removed and because of this nothing would have suffered: neither the plot, nor the atmosphere, nor the main characters. For example, the wife and son of Ken Miles (aka Christian Bale). I suggest you remember what role they played for the plot and for the disclosure of the character of Bale. I think no one, like me, can remember this, because they did nothing useful that did not prevent them from occupying a good part of screen time. They had no direct effect on the plot, and no event was a consequence of their actions or their influence. Nor was Bale's character revealed through them, though that would be the most obvious use of them. He wasn't a family man, he wasn't, and the film wasn't about his relationship with his family. His whole character was an enthusiast to the bone, an ideological and principled person, he made all the decisions himself, just as all his ideas came to his mind, and were not prompted by the family. If you remove these two characters, the plot will not suffer in any way, and Bale’s hero will cope perfectly without them, let the film be a little more empty and chamber. But at least he won’t be annoyed by his wife, who comes to hand with her comments and advice.
Another notable thing to do without was the plot twist at the end. Can this event be called a turning point? It happened simply because, without meaning, without presupposition, without consequences. Why do this if it will not affect anything, since the storyline is already over, it is time to take stock, read the morals? For cheap drama, perhaps. Self-exciting, nothing more.
Also, the film lacks some, let’s say, information support. This is expressed in the weak motivation of some characters and in the absence of normal exposure.
First, it is not clear what guides the “right hand” Ford is an arrogant blonde. Why does he keep plotting Miles? Because he once spoke unflatteringly about the Mustang? That's a good reason. However, almost the entire main conflict (and there are two of them in the film) is built on his machinations.
Secondly, it was only by the middle of the film that I realized that Shelby was not just some kind of rock rock from a mountain, but already a respected auto designer, and Miles was not just a mechanic, but a well-known racer. It would be very nice if I was told about it from the very beginning, when it was necessary to represent the main characters and their background.
I would like to mention the double conflict mentioned earlier. The film really has two climaxes (getting permission for Miles to race with the Ford GT, as well as the race itself), which is quite interesting and unclear whether this is good or bad. But for me personally, it made the film long, because when the first climax almost came and you feel the finale approaching, suddenly it turns out that there is still as much timekeeping ahead.
I also think it lacks a good soundtrack. The one already available consisted of a pair of distinct songs, one of which was repeated three times in a film. Such an action film needs a stronger and more tenacious soundtrack with more noticeable compositions.
To sum up, I think it’s a pretty good simple family movie for wide screens. One of those movies that you have to watch once, not think about anything and not pay attention to anything. Because if you look at it, you will see more minuses than pluses.

Races, gum, corporations & nbsp; — From this so & nbsp; brings boredom
It's a movie about racing. About how the manufacturer of cars for the mass buyer wanted to make a racing car, and what he got. Actor Matt Damon and the gum in his mouth. He's a real American with that gum. Car tycoon Ford personifies the entire bureaucratic system of the sprawling corporation. "Man and System" - what can come out of this rattling mixture, you can see in this film. Racing - it can captivate teenagers and only. For me, the movie was boring. Well, what kind of person can dictate their terms to a corporation? What rights and benefits can a person talk about in the United States, in the world of corporations? That's funny. I loved the moment when Christian Bale said with a smile to his wife that he would work for Ford for $200 a day.
Money for Bale and gum for Damon is what matters to their heroes. The corporation system, the race from the Europeans, the American gum - that's what the movie is about. It's too sluggish. Corporate officials in the United States play a huge role, since there are no state corporations in America (there were no state corporations in the 1960s). Bale and Damon's friendship is impossible without money. You need money everywhere. Henry Ford 2: “This race car is worth $9 million!” Director James Mangold made a film about cars and big money, with which you can buy cool cars. For me, the film was boring because it was about money, not human relationships. Damon with his gum personifies all hopes for a big expense Ford because of the race “24 Le Mans”.
The movie is boring. No drama can go on for 2 hours and 30 minutes (people just fall asleep in the hall). Racing, gum, respectability – that’s what Ford pays his millions for. I love how Tracy Letts plays Henry Ford 2. The actors are good, but the story about the race is not interesting to anyone.
The Ferrari represents all the sophistication and elegance of the European car. Ford is a system, it is stable money and profits from a mass car.
It is believed that usually, films about racing for women are not the most interesting. It's a man thing. In fact, everyone loves speed, regardless of gender, the girl just does not always like when it comes to technical aspects. It’s also the hero who is driving. The Ford vs. Ferrari movie is fine with that. The main characters are played by good and charismatic actors. And as a woman, there's a lot to worry about. One has a heart valve problem in the most literal sense, but machines are his life. The second is a harmful character, but he has a family and a huge talent for a racer.
Add to that the retro atmosphere, the charm of which many people miss, these funny cars, and it is not a boring movie. At least I’ve heard a few opinions from women who went to the movies for the second half, but were very happy.
The story revolves around a situation that took place many years ago. That is, this movie is not from the category of sucked from the finger of mutty “Alien vs. Predator”, which was shot only because you need something to surprise the viewer.
In order to save the reputation and company, it was really important for Ford to enlist the support of a more solid and promising partner. And better than the "goods face" its pluses and not show ...
In general, the essence of the film is the usual - to do the impossible, bring victory and all that. But the more you watch this movie, the more that much-coveted victory goes, and it turns out that the film is mostly about these two guys, their inner attitude to work and what they love. That is not so much about racing as about character.
It's not just for men, by the way. Miles' wife at one point showed just the same burrows, it became clear from what he chose her. Although at the beginning of the film she seemed just a good wife, trying to understand and accept her husband.
If you’re expecting a typical movie ending, it’s going to be different. And it's probably the most rewarding thing. Although it leaves a feeling... I will not describe what kind of, too big spoiler it will be.
But for a little more than 2 hours, thanks to great acting work, I was probably more attached than ever to the characters, worried about them. Because, as I said, this movie wasn't about cars, it was about people who couldn't see their lives without cars. In this you can sympathize with them, because they are always on the nerve, and envy, because they do exactly what they sincerely love.
Perhaps the film spaces are a little stretched, but in fact, there are few such moments that you want to remove. And this is also an acting merit... I'm sure I'll want to see it again later.
So it's a good movie about racing and cars, but the people in it are in the first place, which is great.
I am very fond of racing themes, I am fond of karting and racing sports simulators on PC and PS4, so expectations for a film with such a high rating were very high. I was waiting for the film at the level of Race, but unfortunately the expectations were not fully met. But let's go over the points:
1. Plot.
The plot is based on real events, and surprisingly the events are conveyed quite accurately, as was actually the case (usually in Hollywood movies they like to embellish and change many details for the sake of effect, but this is practically not there). This is definitely a big plus for the film. Although the event itself is not presented so clearly. Usually in Hollywood movies, any event is presented as a great feat, as a blessing for humanity, even an event that is not so important is empty. The success of Ford is shown here as the success of a rich company, a kind of evil corporation, which failed to absorb Ferrari, but wanted to at least humiliate this small but proud Italian company. And the fact that “evil wins” is somehow conveyed very dryly, it does not cause much emotion, because I do not care about Ferrari and do not understand even the motivation of the hero. For example, Ken Miles has a very difficult life situation: he is already quite old (over 40 years, which is a lot for racing), gave many years to racing, but could not make much money, could not get into a good racing team, and in general is on the verge of ruin. But at the same time, his fate is shown so cardboardly and unemotionally that I can never believe in the reality of what is happening, because in the face of this hero I see neither despair nor doubts that should have been. For example, in the film, it is casually mentioned that the safety of riders was at a very low level at the time, and that it was very easy to die. And it would be easy to make some effect of the drama, based on contradictions:
1. The main character is old, poor, has achieved nothing, and there is not much chance to achieve.
2. The protagonist has a son and a non-working wife. It is time to get a good job and provide for your family.
3. Racing is very dangerous and the risk of dying is very high (leaving the family without financial support).
I don’t know why that’s not in the movie. I remember the analogies with the film “Knockdown”, where the main character is just an old and achieved nothing boxer, suffering from unemployment, and the family lives from hand to hand. Also recalled and “Race”, where many times it is emphasized that the race is very dangerous, that any collision with the fence can be the last in life, and it is felt, even though no one dies there.
2. Actors play. I respect Christian Bale, but I didn’t see a good game. At this level, almost any actor could play. I didn't feel any sympathy for Bale's hero. Matt Damon has never been a good actor. It seems to me that Enzo Ferrari turned out to be the most striking, although he does not have the main role.
3. Racing staging. It was very nice to see the familiar racing tracks, which I both raced in racing simulators and saw in racing series. Not bad shots of the view from the cockpit, shows the work of the team and low reliability of cars during 24-hour races. But, in my opinion, watching much less interesting than in the movie “Race”, something is missing. Especially annoying is the fact that when overtaking the riders constantly look not at the road, but at each other in the eyes. This is repeated many times and looks ridiculous, absurd and stupid. Who invented this?
The film's message is extremely weak. After watching the film to the end, I did not get the impression that the events in the film played any important role in the history of world racing. It was portrayed as if global giant Ford had thrown out a few million and "buyed the victory" out of his own ambitions. The main characters did not get much from these races, their contribution is minimal, because all Ford drivers went much faster than competitors, and if they replaced the main character with another driver, then nothing would change. This devalues the contribution of the main character. The fact that the car was assembled... Ford already had a great engine and a lot of money. With such parameters, victory was only a matter of time.
In general, this is another Hollywood film about an “important event” of dubious importance. But at the same time, for some reason, unlike most Hollywood films, neither the importance of what is happening, nor the importance of the characters, nor the attachment to the characters is felt. A very passing film with an overrated score. I was bored watching it for 2 hours 30 minutes, I would cut it down to 1:40.
6 out of 10
Negative review because expectations were much higher, and instead disappointment.
