Since 1921, Kapler was an actor of FEX, organized in Petrograd by Kozintsev and L. Trauberg, in the films of the participants of FEX he began to act, playing his first role in the adventure film "Devil's Wheel" (1926). In 1928, Alexei Kapler was an assistant to A. Dovzhenko on the set of the film “Arsenal”, and in 1929-30 he put on his own scripts “cultural films” – paintings that popularized various branches of science and technology. The first screenplays of feature films were Three Comrades (1935) and Miners (1937). The films “Lenin in October” (1937) and “Lenin in 1918” (1939) received great fame. Successful was the script of the adventure film Kotovsky (1942), directed by A. Feinzimmer. On the basis of his own correspondence from partisan detachments, Kapler wrote the script “Peaceful People” – it was directed by F. Ermler under the title “She Defends the Motherland” (1943). However, then in the fate of the famous playwright came a sharp turn - his stormy romance with Stalin's daughter Svetlana was publicized, and Kapler was arrested, and ten years, until 1953, spent in prison. Therefore, the next picture according to his script appeared on the screens only in 1956 - "Behind the storefront." Of the later works, great success was accompanied by the film comedy Striped Flight (1961, together with V. Konetsky) and the spectacular film Amphibian Man (1961, together with A. Goldberg and A. Xenophontov). In addition, Alexei Kapler was one of the organizers and host of the popular television program "Kinopanorama".
