He came to Moscow from Petrograd in 1922 as a well-known author, a member of the literary group Serapionov Brothers; he was considered one of the most gifted among the Serapions. During the war he was a correspondent of the newspaper “Izvestia”. A number of Ivanov’s works were not printed during his lifetime, including the novel “U”, close to the genre of dystopias, in phantasmagorical satirical forms recreating pictures of Moscow’s life during the destruction of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior (published in 1988). Since 1937 he lived in Lavrushinsky lane, 17. He was buried in the Novodevichy cemetery.
