Ivan Mikolaichuk was born in the village of Chortoria (now Chernivtsi region of Ukraine) on June 15, 1941. He studied at the Chernivtsi Music School, which he graduated in 1957, then studied at the theater-studio of the Chernivtsi Musical and Drama Theater named after Olga Kobylyanskaya, after which he entered the Karpenk-Karogo KGITI at the acting faculty in the workshop of V.I. In 1965, Ivan graduated from KGITI and starred in the film Viper, where he played the role of the White Guard Brykin, and the following year in the film Buryan he played David Motuzka. Later, the actor starred in such films as “The Mistake of Honore de Balzac” (1968), “Annychka” (1968), “Stone Cross” (1968), “Scouts” (1968), “Liberation” (1968-1969) and “Commissioners” (1970).
In 1970, the film “White Bird with a Black Mark” was released, based on the script by Ivan Mikolaichuk. He also wrote music for him and played the role of Peter Dzvonar. In 1971, the actor starred in three films at once - "I am coming to you", "Lada from the country of Berendeyev" and "Zakhar Berkut". In total, he played in more than thirty-six films.
His long-standing dream to try himself as a director Mikolaichuk was able to realize in 1979. According to his script, he directed the film Babylon XX, for which he wrote music and played the role of Fabian. Six years later, another Mikolaichuk movie was released - "Such a Late Autumn."
In 1967, Ivan Mikolaichuk was awarded the Lenin Komsomol Prize of the Ukrainian SSR, and in 1968 he was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the Ukrainian SSR.
Ivan Mikolaichuk died of cancer on August 3, 1987, buried in Kiev at the Baikovsky cemetery. In 1988, Ivan Vasilyevich Mikolaichuk was awarded the T.G. Shevchenko State Prize posthumously.
