After higher education, Smart began to perform in the Broadway theater, where the first debut work was the role of Marlene Didrich, which three years later the actress embodied on the screen. For participation in the play "Last summer in the Bay of blue fish" Jean was nominated for the Drama Desk.
In the 1970s-80s, the actress starred in the films “Facts from life”, “Remington Steel”, “Flash”, “Protocol”, “Safety is guaranteed”, “Wedge with a wedge”.
Wide popularity came to the actress after participating in the series “Creating a woman”. She worked there for five years, after which she terminated the contract.
In the following years, there were roles in the films Creating a Woman, Mass Murder: The Story of Eileen Wuornos, Yirling, Scarlett, The Brady Family, Style and Matter, Excessive Influence.

In 2000, Jean received an Emmy Award for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Lorna Linley in Frazier. The following year she won a Tony Award for her role in The Man Who Came to Dinner.
In the following years, Jean Smart starred in the films “Stylish Thing”, “House upside down”, “Country of Gardens”, “Center of the Universe”, “24 Hours”, “Who is Samantha?”.
Jean is married to actor Richard Gilliland and the couple have a son, Connor Douglas.
