He first appeared on stage in the school play You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, in which he played the role of Snoopy.
After graduating from high school, Gary enrolled at Acting University in the faculty of theater in Illinois. His classmates were such future Hollywood stars as John Malkovich and Laurie Metcalfe.
In 1985, he moved to Chicago, where he joined the Steppenwolf Theatre Company. In addition, he successfully performed in Broadway productions of New York.
But the film audience knows Gary primarily from the numerous series in which he starred without a break, often in several at once. These are "The West Wing," "Beauties," "Death Vision," "Midnight Caller," "Desperate Housewives." The audience remembered him in the films “Kim Almighty”, “Harvey Bedman, Lawyer”, “I’ll be back by Christmas”, “Bouncers”.
