He made his debut as a screenwriter in the 1992 comedy Double Troubles directed by John Paragon. After that, scripts for the films “Neighbor”, “Fear”, “Wolves” were written.
Wimmer's first directing job was "That Cool Bastard." However, the directorial debut was extremely unsuccessful, and after that, for almost seven years Kurt hesitated to take on new films. As a screenwriter over the years, he has appeared in only two films - "The Sphere" and "The Thomas Crown Hustle".
He returned to directing only in 2002, releasing a fantasy thriller Equilibrium. Alas, this work was also frankly a failure. To somehow distract from the failures, Kurt again returned to the work of the writer, working on the thriller “Recruit”, where the famous Al Pacino played the main role.
In 2006, Kurt Wimmer with enviable tenacity again tries himself as a director and shoots fantasy.
"Ultraviolet" with Milla Jovovich in the lead role. However, the film suffers the same fate as the first two.
Wimmer was forced to admit to himself that the screenwriter from him is much more talented than the director, and in subsequent years he was engaged only in writing scripts for the films “Kings of the streets”, “Law-abiding citizen”, “Salt”.
