Denis Leary was born and raised in Warchester, Massachusetts, to Irish immigrants Nora and John Leary. He graduated from Emmerson College in Boston, where he first tested himself as an actor and writer. After graduating from college, Leary immediately received an invitation to teach at his alma mater, which he did for five years. By that time he was already publishing in several magazines and working successfully in theater, mainly in comedies.
In 1990, Denis and his wife flew to London for a weekend to perform in the Air Force. Anne went to the hospital because that was the day she started giving birth. Denis, left to himself, began to write a comedy play, then called his friends from the States, and they all wrote the music and songs for the show. At the Edinburgh International Arts Festival, Denis Leary, Chris Phillips and Adam Roth played "There is no cure for cancer." There were protests by those dissatisfied with the play's title, but the play received a critical award and recommendations for television. The following year, Leary took the show home to America, and in 1992 the play was shown on television. Leary, discovering a talent for entrepreneurship, made a book, disc, video and audio cassettes, and on the crest of success moved to Hollywood.
