The Inguri River forms a natural border dividing Georgia from Abkhazia. One of the spring floods has created a little island in the middle of the river, as if made for the cultivation of corn. At least, this is the belief of an old peasant, whose sunburned face resembles the landscape he has trodden for dozens of years. close

Over the course of one year, this film follows the life of an ordinary Pyongyang family whose daughter was chosen to take part in Day of the Shining Star (Kim Jong-il's birthday) celebration. While North Korean government wanted a propaganda film, the director kept on filming between the scripted scenes. The ritualized explosions of color and joy contrast sharply with pale everyday reality, which is not particularly terrible, but rather quite surreal. close

The authors of the film showed not only behind the scenes of political life, but also presented the famous politician, the first president of the Czech Republic, as an ordinary person.
A few weeks before the premiere, posters appeared on the streets of Prague inviting the viewer to watch a documentary about the first president of the Czech Republic. On them, Vaclav Havel is depicted in a suit and striped socks, with a polka dot tie and a favorite terrier. That is how the authors and producers of the film want to present the main character to the audience. close

“You bet on someone in the beginning of the process and then you wait and see what life does with them.” This is how Czech director Helena Trestikova explains her long-term documentaries. Following on from the European Film Academy Award winning RENE (2008), Trestikova brings us KATKA – 14 years in the life of a drug addict. KATKA is an extraordinarily raw and uncensored character portrait of a troubled young woman living on the edge of human existence, desperately searching for love and salvation. Will she find it in the rehab? Will she find it in the arms of the man she loves? Or in the first cry of her long-desired baby? Tagging along with her through the back streets and squalors of Prague, Trestikova gets deep under the skin of a person most of us would cross the road to avoid, and shows us Katka’s profoundly human face. You might be angry with Katka, or your heart may go out to her. One thing is certain – you will never forget her. close

At a blind school in the Czech Republic, the children exuberantly show off their remarkable talents – as musicians, as radio announcers, as daredevil bike riders and, most extraordinary of all, as photographers. Why take pictures of a world you can’t see? To capture memories, of course, that sighted people can describe back to them. This controversial feature blends documentary, archival footage and fiction into an elliptical narrative in which two young people in Prague, an ancient seat for the practice of alchemy, follow the trail for the mystical philosopher's stone. History and future blend as brilliant montage sequences and fanciful leaps of the imagination work to posit questions about the legacy of the past and how it influences the individual's personal freedom and responsibility. close

The director is talented enough to “recreate” the whole world and the aesthetics of Central Europe, the moral state of minds on the eve of World War I and the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. His film is the very specific atmosphere of Bohemia, its original folklore, customs, its poetic landscape. Each frame is an outstanding black and white picture, rare in modern cinema. Music, script and acting (even children) are also good. The rhythm of history, the construction of personnel surprised Western professionals. Just get in the mood of this movie and enjoy its gentle and rare charm. close
