A Soviet cult cartoon, so untypical for a Western viewer, especially, a little one. A boy named Malysh ("A Little One") suffers from solitude being the youngest of the three children in a Swedish family. The acute sense of solitude makes him desperately want a dog, but before he gets one, he "invents" a friend - the very Karlson who lives upon the roof. So typical for the Russian culture spirit of mischief, which is, actually, never punished, and the notion that relative welfare not necessarily means happiness made the book by Astrid Lindgren and its TV adaptations tremendously popular in the Soviet Union and nowadays Russia and vice versa - somewhat alienated to the Western reader and viewer (see User's comments below). However, both the book and the cartoon are truly universal - entertaining and funny for the children and thought-provoking and somewhat sad for grownups. close

The 1970 film “Carlson is back” is one of the parts of the story about the Kid and Carlson, based on the original tales of the Swedish writer A. Lindgren. The author of the project is the director B. Stepantsev.
After the Kid receives a dog as a gift, and Carlson flew away in an unknown direction, nothing else pleases the boy. He realizes that even a dog as desirable cannot replace his mischievous friend. Not realizing what is happening to their son, the parents decide to hire a teacher. Soon, the uncompromising Franken Bock appears in the house, who promises that she will make Baby a man and that parents will not recognize their child.
“Home-teacher”, obsessed with discipline and cleanliness, immediately takes control in their own hands and establishes harsh orders. The moment the Kid, locked in his room by the inexorable Franken Bock, in desperation knocks at the door, Carlson reappears on the stage. All this time he was in the village with his grandmother. Tired of a long flight, the occupant of the roof declares that he must immediately refuel, preferably with a cake. However, the Kid is unable to help his friend, as Frecken Bock locked him up. Extremely outraged by the lawlessness perpetrated by the “home-teacher”, Carlson, along with the Kid, begin to implement a cunning plan. close
