It is a retooling of a script originally shot as a 94-minute pilot for a TV series (co-written with TV screenwriter Joyce Eliason) for the channel ABC, which had approved the script, but chose not even to air the pilot once it was done in 1999, despite Lynch's labours to cut the project to their liking. It was left in limbo until 18 month later French company Studio Canal Plus (also producer of 'The Straight Story') agreed to pay ABC $7 million for the pilot, and budget a few million more to turn the pilot into a two-hour, 27-minute movie. The cost of the film doubled to $14 million as sets had to be reconstructed and actors recalled. close

In a secret laboratory under the leadership of Dr. Joseph Keppler, developing the latest technologies in the field of cloning, an emergency occurs. During one of the experiments, killing one of the researchers, escapes to the wild rather bloodthirsty creature, known under the code name - "Sample 17". By doing so, the facility threw 84 million francs into the wind, which was the cost of the project. The only one who was against such an experiment was one of the main theorists of this project, Mark Lehman, who after a splash with his boss, because of which he was immediately fired. Mark, thrown out of his favorite job, goes to visit his ex-wife Eva and their daughter Anna, who live near the largest lake in Germany, located on the border with Switzerland. Eva Lehman once worked in the same laboratory as Mark, but, frightened by the prospects, left science and devoted herself to raising difficult teenagers. Here, on Lake Constance, she kept something like a summer camp for high-risk children. And here on this lake begin to occur strange disappearances of people, which soon Mark associated with the escape from the laboratory of an artificial sample. On top of everything, an amazing fact emerges. It turns out that the blood taken for the experiment with the convert-17 was the blood of Eva Lehman, taken from her during her work in the laboratory. So nominally, Eve, as it doesn't sound fantastic, turns out to be the mother of this dinosaur-like monster.
