Gennady Kazansky was born on December 1, 1910 in Voronezh. In 1930 he graduated from the film department of the Higher courses of art history in Leningrad and in 1931 was admitted to the staff of the film studio "Lenfilm", where he worked as an assistant director ("Meeting", "Secret of the firm"). In 1937, together with M. Ruf, Gennady Kazansky directed the film "Taiga Golden". During the war, he worked as a second director at the TsOKS in Almaty, Mosfilm. After the war he returned to “Lenfilm” and as a director participated in the creation of the biographical picture “Rimsky-Korsakov”. After uninteresting experiments in the production of films-performances, he found himself in the film adaptation of L. Lagin’s tale “The Old Man Hottabych”, rich in bright comedic characters and tricks. In 1961, he took up shooting a fantasy-adventure film and in collaboration with V. Chebotarev created one of the highest-grossing and popular paintings of this genre in the history of Soviet cinema - "Amphibious Man". Together with P. Kadochnikov, he shot a successful film about the events of the civil war (“Musicians of one regiment”). Later, Gennady Kazansky worked in different genres, addressing children’s, military and socio-political themes. Among the films of the director are “The Snow Queen” (1966), “The Unknown Heir” (1974), “The New Year Adventures of Masha and Viti” (1975), “Engineer Graftio” (1979).
