Steven Sommers was born March 20, 1962 in Indianapolis (Indiana, USA), grew up in St. Cloud (Minnesota). He studied at the University of St. John, then at the University of Seville. Sommers spent four years in Europe, where he worked as a performer and manager of rock bands, and also played on stage. Upon his return to his homeland, he entered the film school of the University of Southern California and three years later received a master's degree. According to his script, Sommers put a short film "The Perfect Alibi", marked by a professional award. In 1989, the director made his debut in the “big” movie, directing the film “Catch Me If You Can”. He then filmed adaptations of the classic books The Adventures of Huck Finn (1993) and The Jungle Book (1994) for Disney. He also worked on Bandits (1994) and The Adventures of Tom and Huck (1995) as a screenwriter, and in the latter case as an executive producer. In 1998, Steven Sommers directed the horror film Rise from the Deep, but he did not achieve box office success. Much more luck fell on the share of "The Mummy" (1999), shot by Sommers on his script - which was based on the film of 1932. Despite the cool attitude of critics, the audience of “The Mummy”, stuffed with special effects and not without humor, liked the film became a blockbuster in the summer of 1999. The director continued – and not without success – to exploit his breakthrough in Hollywood: The Mummy Returns (2001) soon came out. However, for the third film, “King of the Scorpions”, he only wrote the script, but already in the film “Revenge of the Mummy” (2004). Sommers took the director's chair again. Undoubted attraction to memorable visual series and special effects was manifested in the new film "Van Helsing" (2004).
