In addition, fate more than once brought him together with Shakespeare: it all began with the play “Much Ado About Nothing”, which for the “British Theater National Company” was staged by Franco Zefirelli, and then John played Mercutio in the legendary film of the same director – “Romeo and Juliet” (1968).

Even before playing Mercutio, McEnery made his film debut in one of the roles of the adaptation of Shakespeare's tragedy Othello (1965).
Film Romeo and Juliet It was John’s second job on the set. His Mercutio, coming down from the book pages, turned out to be more than realistic: wit, philosopher, comedian, and at the same time a man of honor, not forgiving offenses, bold, brave and vulnerable. . .
For the role of Mercutio, John McEnery was nominated for a BAFTA award.
In May 1973, John McEnery led actress Stephanie Beacham to the crown, who gave him two daughters, Phoebe and Holly. After five years of marriage, the couple separated.
In 1990, the actor took part in a new project Zeffirelli: he played a role in Hamlet. Eight years later, McEnery tried himself in the role of a playwright: he wrote a play Merry Christmas, Mr. Burbage in honor of the 400th anniversary of the Globe Theater.
John McAnery is not going to put an end to this: on the stage of the Globe in 2004, he again plays Romeo and Juliet, but now the monk Lorenzo. Time has not aged this energetic man - John still has something to say to his viewer. /
