With the help of guitarist Ben Mink, C.D. Lange formed the band and recorded her first album, Friday Dance Promenade, in 1983. In 1985, the singer, who recorded several discs with the band, was awarded the Juno Award as "the most promising vocalist". In 1986, C.D. Lang signed with Sire and a year later her solo debut album Angel with a Lariat was released. This collection of melodic ballads in the style of the 50s received good reviews, especially from rock critics and became a hit in Canada. In 1987, she and Roy Orbison recorded "Crying" for the film Hiding Out. C.D. Lange's major success was the gold-winning album Shadowland, and the song "I'm Down to My Last Cigarette" entered the top 40. She then released the albums Absolute Torch and Twang (1989), Ingenue (1992), the latter being platinum in America, Australia, the UK and twice platinum in Canada.
