A graduate of the border school, a recent schoolboy Kolya Pluzhnikov, arrives on June 21, 1941 at a new duty station - in Brest. On the last pre-war evening, he meets the girl Mirra, who then, in the flames of shelling and fighting, becomes his guide in the casemates of the Brest fortress.
Nicholas, who became an elusive saboteur, manages to hold out in the fortress until April 1942. His comrades are killed, the faithful Mirra leaves and does not return, and one day the fascists manage to drive Pluzhnikov into a trap. When from the cellars of the fortress comes to light gray, ageless man and proudly raised head goes to meet the enemies, they give him the highest military honors.
