After he graduated from high school, Thompson attended Central Washington State University. He was trained in business and management. Then he studied at the University of California, where he graduated with a Master of Arts degree. All this time, the young man went to various castings, as a result of which he entered the theater, in which he almost immediately received the main role in the play The King and I.
