The actor in Volod was first seen by Mikhail Azovskiy, the head of the drama club, who was then engaged in talented young men who later became famous personalities. Before his retirement into the army, Vladimir worked with the youth studio Pomerantsev Y. B. and even got into the auxiliary staff of the academic republican theater named after M. Y. Lermontov. After serving in Germany, he went to Moscow, submitting documents to VGIK, but did not pass. The failure was explained by the fact that he had too specific appearance. Then he went to the city of Kuibyshev, where he settled in the TYZ. Having played more than a dozen roles in one season in the theater, he entered the Yaroslavl Theater School.
The role of Lesha in Vasilis the Beautiful was his first big role. His most successful theatrical work was the role of Quasimodo in the famous play “Notre Dame de Paris”.
On the screen, Tolokonnikov was opened to viewers already in adulthood. Director Vladimir Bortko could not decide who to take on the role of Sharikov in the film Heart of a Dog. He asked to bring pictures of the most ugly actors and find someone who would look like a dog. Among these photos were the famous Alexei Zharkoi and Nikolai Karachentsov. Vladimir conquered Bortko at the final auditions, playing a scene with vodka.
