William Horatio Powell is an American actor, born in 1892 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After some time, his family moved to Kansas, where William graduated from high school and enrolled at the behest of his father in the University of Kansas law school. At the beginning of his career, William Powell played in silent films the characteristic roles of villains and for a long time entrenched in this role. Success came to the actor after playing the role of Professor Moriarty in the legendary film about Sherlock Holmes (1922) and comedy roles in such films as
"The Thin Man" (1934) and My Husband Godfrey (1936). In the same years he married actress Carol Lobard, but the marriage did not last long and after the divorce Powell proposed to Jean Harlow. But the tragedy disrupted the plans of the lovers: shortly before the wedding, at the age of 29, Harlow died. In the winter of 1940, William Powell married actress Diana Lewis. The third and happy marriage of the actor lasted 44 years.
