Yelena Alekseyevna — the woman she finds when she arrives at the address turns out to be a teacher in a ballet school, the wife of an ordinary senior teacher at the Moscow Technical Institute (who didn't defend his dissertation and is complacent about this) and an old-Moscow intellectual. A sublime, exceptionally well acted film about a single working class mother and her teenage son. She finds a man and marries him, her son is jealous and full of hot air at first but comes to understand her in the end. That's all. The simplicity of the story notwithstanding, this is one of the most sincere and lyrical films to have been produced in the 1960s-1970s Soviet Union. Very realistic, too, showing the life as it was then. Lyusyena Ovchinnikova is superb, it is this film that makes one realize what a wonderful and under-appreciated actress she was. Nikolay Burlyayev is very good as a lanky teenager, the final scene with him carrying a glass of carbonated water for his mother is stunning. Oleg Efremov is very convincing as a working class man who found his happiness at last. close

Yegor Dmitrievich Glumov (Mikhail Tsarev), a poor young man, confidently makes a career. His deft flattery, hypocrisy, subservience, the ability to take advantage of the weaknesses of those in power at the right time help him in his ambitious plans. The hero of the play “Every sage has enough simplicity” is proud of his ability to get into the trust of his patrons, at the same time ridiculing the vulgarity and stupidity of these gentlemen behind their backs.
Step by step, Glumov manages to win the favor of his wealthy relative Neil Fedoseevich Mamaev and his wife Cleopatra Lvovna. With their mediation, Yegor Dmitrievich makes acquaintances with influential people Gorodulin (Konstantin Zubov) and Krutitsky (Igor Ilyinsky).
The next step of the main character of the film “It’s Enough for Every Sage” is no less successful – he becomes an entrance to the house of a rich Moscow lady Turusina and soon turns into a contender for the title of groom for her niece. Glumov is ready to give a lot to bring the long-awaited wedding day closer. close

Both tales look back to the post-revolutionary era: 'Angel' speaks tragically of the brutality and destruction of the time, and 'The Homeland of Electricity' captures its haunting grotesquery. close
