Fred Ward, full name Freddie Joe Ward, was born in San Diego on December 30, 1942.
He served three years in the Air Force, then worked as a lumberjack in Alaska. Later, Fred surprised everyone, and first of all himself, by entering the studio of Herbert Berghof. He then left for permanent residence in Rome. He worked as a voice actor for Italian films when he was asked to collaborate with Roberto Rossellini.
