Honored Artist of the RSFSR, director Efim Hamburg for almost forty years of creative activity has created at least thirty animated films for children and adults. “What is good and what is bad” is one of his first films. It was shot as a film adaptation of the poem of the same name by Vladimir Mayakovsky and was conceived as the beginning of the series “Books for the youngest” at number one. Simple and imaginative cartoon "What is good and what is bad" is drawn in restrained pastel tones and voiced by the music of the beautiful "children's" composer Vladimir Shainsky, widely known to the audience for the mass of popular songs from cartoons.

The boy asked the father a question and he put his son on his lap to answer him. The pencil immediately opens a picture of a dirty boy hiding in a dark room from prying eyes. The lasticle begins to clean the room, and the “conductor” with a pencil nose reads poems about how dirt is dangerous for children’s skin. This boy is wrong and risks becoming a patient of a strict doctor. He is given an example of a child who likes to wash, bathe in the bath and therefore is always healthy and cheerful.
The little boy plays in the sandbox and is quite happy, but then a bully, much older than him, comes to him and offends the poor scruff for no reason. The resentment and tears of the child outrage the Pencil and he, angrily seizing the evil bully, just throws him out of the book. It is clear that someone who does so badly should not be an example to others. But the adult ugliness does not calm down, and sneaking back to the page, threatens the baby with a slingshot. Then the intelligent Pencil simply puts in front of him a good pioneer, always ready to stand up for justice. close

A Soviet cult cartoon, so untypical for a Western viewer, especially, a little one. A boy named Malysh ("A Little One") suffers from solitude being the youngest of the three children in a Swedish family. The acute sense of solitude makes him desperately want a dog, but before he gets one, he "invents" a friend - the very Karlson who lives upon the roof. So typical for the Russian culture spirit of mischief, which is, actually, never punished, and the notion that relative welfare not necessarily means happiness made the book by Astrid Lindgren and its TV adaptations tremendously popular in the Soviet Union and nowadays Russia and vice versa - somewhat alienated to the Western reader and viewer (see User's comments below). However, both the book and the cartoon are truly universal - entertaining and funny for the children and thought-provoking and somewhat sad for grownups. close
