He always gives her gifts with the same words, and today’s is no exception. However, Meli admires her mistress's husband.
And yet today the husband, despite the banal speeches, showed himself differently. A living gift from him is the ugly slave Aesop, “the most terrible in all Greece,” according to her husband. At first, Clay wants to get rid of the slave, but he tells her the story that a person quite easily gets used to both beauty and ugliness. This causes the interest and location of the hostess. Contrary to inequality
More and more attached to Aesop, the hostess offers him help in order to escape, but Aesop believes that having escaped, he will constantly fear for his life and wants to get freedom only by legal means.
Later, Agnostos comes to visit the philosopher – a sage who wants nothing from this life. This gentleman turns out to be the Athenian commander, whom Clay was previously fascinated with. After getting drunk, Xanthos signs a paper on which he must drink the sea, and if he cannot do so, he must give all his possessions to Agnostos. The wife is disturbed by her husband’s recklessness, and she decides to leave him. Xanthos promises his wise slave freedom if he returns it. The slave carries out the task, but again does not receive freedom.
Meanwhile, Clay falls in love with Aesop, who also cares about her. However, the slave refuses the lady who slanders him before her husband, claiming that he harasses her.
