Opening remarks by film critic Alexander Shpagin.
The production was carried out by director Konstantin Khudyakov, known for the films “Live in Your Own Way”, “Mother of Jesus”, “Who Will Pay for Luck?”, “Success”, “Without a Return Address”, TV series “Such a Short Long Life”, “Impostors”. This is not the first experience of cooperation of the famous director with the TV channel: on "Culture" there were performances staged by Khudyakov, he hosted the TV program "Theater. Classics". The script was written by playwright, director and TV presenter Andrei Maksimov, who hosts the program Night Flight on the TV channel "Culture". The script is based on the stories of Russian writers about love.
“Island without Love” is a unique television work, the plot is based on the undeservedly forgotten and little-known stories of Russian writers of the XX century. Each part is a feature film based on one of the novels. The series organically intertwines the events of the past and the present - stories about love and "working days" of the actors of the provincial theater.
"Before we start shooting the film," says director Konstantin Khudyakov, "we shoveled a huge amount of literature, selecting the plots. In the Russian prose of the XX century love stories - a great many. It was not interesting for me to do just a staging, and we came up with this move: all the love stories of “Island” are played by a troupe of one theater, and each artist plays two roles of the opposite plan.
Each film is a world of mysterious, elusive and obvious, healing and destructive, beautiful and terrible feelings and human passions called love. The broad historical and social context pushes the boundaries of private love and family stories.
The stories selected by us are mostly sad, telling about the hardships of love, unfulfilled hopes, broken fates. Love is not a cloudless glamour, sometimes a drama, sometimes a tragedy. Even Grigory Gorin’s story “Family Happiness”, written in Gorin lightly and witty, is actually a very serious – and sad – story about how a prosperous family was almost destroyed because of a ridiculous whim, about how little we value what we have.
The first film - "Ionic" according to the story of A. Chekhov
The film tells about the failed love and unfulfilled happiness of Dmitry Ionich Startsev (Mikhail Khomyakov) and Katenki (Olesya Sudzilovskaya).
Startsev - Mikhail Khomyakov,
Katya - Olesya Sudzilovskaya,
Turkin - Nikolai Denisov,
Turkina - Natalia Yegorova,
Pava is Pavel Starostin.
The second film - "The Clock" according to the story of Yevgeny Zamyatin
The curious story of how a ridiculous mistake – the head of the firewood procurement Semyon Zaitser (Igor Kvasha) mistook a random passerby for a robber and took his watch, mistaking it for his own – became an obstacle to love. Secretary Verochka (Olesya Sudzilovskaya) forever turned away from Zaitzer - he was not a hero, but a robber.
Zaitzer - Igor Kvasha,
Verochka - Olesya Sudzilovskaya,
Kubas - Vitaly Hayev,
The old lady is Antonina Konchakova.
The third film - "Before the extinct comell" according to the story of Pavel Zasodimsky
At the end of life, the sick, half-blind hero of the story remembers his past. Married to a young girl, Barin (Andrey Ilyin) soon becomes a father, but the baby irritates him. Having persuaded his wife Elena (Alena Babenko) to send the child to the village, he secretly surrenders him to an educational home. The madness of the wife and the death of the child are the result of this drama.
Barin - Andrey Ilyin,
Elena is Alena Babenko.
The fourth film - "I will wait for you..." according to the story by Konstantin Paustovsky "Snow"
The film will take viewers to the difficult war years: Tatiana Petrovna (Vera Glagoleva) and her daughter Varya (Aglaja Schmidt) were evacuated and found themselves in the house of old man Potapov. Potapov dies, and from the front for one day comes his son, who instead of his father in his home meets a strange family.
Tatiana Petrovna - Vera Glagoleva,
Nikolai Potapov - Andrei Kazakov,
Natruishik - Igor Kvasha,
Varya is Aglaya Schmidt.
The fifth film - "Hope and Paul" based on the story by Boris Zaitsev "Death"
The heroes of the love triangle (Vasily Bochkarev, Vera Glagoleva, Elena Panova) through suffering and repentance come to understand that "the greatest happiness, like the greatest sorrow of man, is love."
Pavel Antonovich - Vasily Bochkarev,
Nadezhda Vasilievna - Vera Glagoleva,
Nina - Elena Panova,
Andrey - Alexey Zavyalov,
Zina - Alena Babenko,
Natasha is Irina Prokhanova.
The sixth film - "Family happiness" is based on the story by Grigory Gorin "Treason"
Nowadays, being a faithful family man is unfashionable, and therefore Koryushkin (Andrey Ilyin) decides to start a love affair on vacation, unaware of who his lady is and what surprise he expects upon returning home. . .
Koryushkin - Andrei Ilyin,
Koryushkin's wife Olga Tumaykina,
Volokhova - Natalia Egorova,
Monyukov - Alexey Kolgan,
Luba, Snejana Sinkina,
Clara is Marina Churakova. close
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is an American reality television series providing home improvements for less fortunate families and community schools. more
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is an American reality television series providing home improvements for less fortunate families and community schools. The show is hosted by former model, carpenter and veteran television personality Ty Pennington.
Each episode features a family that has faced some sort of recent or ongoing hardship such as a natural disaster or a family member with a life-threatening illness, in need of new hope. The show's producers coordinate with a local construction contractor, which then coordinates with various companies in the building trades for a makeover of the family's home. This includes interior, exterior and landscaping, performed in seven days while the family is on vacation and documented in the episode. If the house is beyond repair, they replace it entirely. The show's producers and crew film set and perform the makeover but do not pay for it. The materials and labor are donated. Many skilled and unskilled volunteers assist in the rapid construction of the house.
EM:HE is considered a spinoff of Extreme Makeover, an earlier series providing personal makeovers to selected individuals, which the Home Edition has now outlasted. This show displays extreme changes to help recreate someone's space. However, the format differs considerably; in the original Extreme Makeover, for instance, participants were not necessarily chosen based on any recent hardship, whereas the family's backstory is an important component of Home Edition. EM:HE also has similarities to other home renovation series such as Trading Spaces, on which Pennington was previously a key personality. close

Shattered City: The Halifax Explosion is a two-part miniseries produced in 2003 by CBC Television. The series was expensive by Canadian television standards with a budget of $10.4 million. It was heavily promoted by the CBC and paired with a number of non-fiction documentaries. The broadcast drew a sizable Canadian audience of 1.5 million viewers. It drew some praise for the adept use of special effects to show the destruction of the explosion. However the miniseries was poorly received critically. One critic at the Globe and Mail described it as "execrably written and acted" while another strained to find positive elements, "At times, there is a plodding workmanlike quality to Shattered City." The miniseries won some technical awards at the Canadian television Gemini Awards in 2004 but was passed over for any direction or writing awards and won only a single supporting acting award for Ted Dykstra. close
