Leo Oskarovich Arnshtam was born on January 15 (2), 1905 in Ekaterinoslavl (now Dnepropetrovsk). In 1923 he graduated from the Leningrad Conservatory in piano, and since 1922 he has been engaged in concert activities. In 1924-1927 Arnstam was in charge of the musical part of the Vs. In 1923 he graduated from the Leningrad Conservatory in piano, and since 1922 he has been engaged in concert activities. In 1924-1927 Arnstam was in charge of the musical part of the Vs. Meyerhold Theatre, acted as the author of the musical design of a number of performances in Leningrad theaters. In 1929, he entered the cinema, began as a sound engineer, then acted as a film playwright (co-writer of the script of the film Golden Mountains, 1931). His fame brought him historical-revolutionary and historical-biographical tapes. As a director, Arnstam made his debut in 1932 with the film “Meeting”. Among other well-known films he staged are Friends (1936), Friends (1938), Zoya (1944), Glinka (1947), and History Lesson (1957). Until 1942, Arnstam worked at the Lenfilm film studio, and in 1945 he became a director at the Mosfilm film studio. He was also known as a writer, acting as the scriptwriter of his films. Together with Leonid Lavrovsky, Leo Arnstam directed the ballet film Romeo and Juliet (1954), which won the prize of the Cannes Film Festival in 1955. In 1968, his last film Sophia Perovskaya was released, telling about the life of a Russian revolutionary. The creative achievements of the director were marked by the Order of the Badge of Honor, two Stalin Prizes (1946, 1947), the honorary title of People's Artist of the RSFSR (1969).
