Yegor Dmitrievich Glumov (Mikhail Tsarev), a poor young man, confidently makes a career. His deft flattery, hypocrisy, subservience, the ability to take advantage of the weaknesses of those in power at the right time help him in his ambitious plans. The hero of the play “Every sage has enough simplicity” is proud of his ability to get into the trust of his patrons, at the same time ridiculing the vulgarity and stupidity of these gentlemen behind their backs.
Step by step, Glumov manages to win the favor of his wealthy relative Neil Fedoseevich Mamaev and his wife Cleopatra Lvovna. With their mediation, Yegor Dmitrievich makes acquaintances with influential people Gorodulin (Konstantin Zubov) and Krutitsky (Igor Ilyinsky).
