There are two of them: a mother and a girl. They have no names. And they are in a constant run. This endless run is full with repeated mistakes and resembles a barrel-organ sorrowful song or a spinning-top rotation. This small ridiculous toy "volchok" was the first toy in the girl's life, the only thing that tied her with the mother. close

Victor Kossakovsky searched obsessively for inhabitants of St. Petersburg who were born on Wednesday 19 July 1961, his own birthday, in former Leningrad. Fifty-one women and fifty men fitted the profile. In the course of time a few of these 101 people had died, others had moved to another community or abroad. But in 1995 Kossakovsky managed to capture on film all seventy remaining residents, in the street, at work or simply at home. While doing so he spent time with doctors and patients, entertainers and businessmen, construction workers and homeless people. In his unorthodox style Kossakovsky has produced a beautiful profile of people in their thirties in St. Petersburg. close

This or something similar could happen in any city. This something, as a rule, does not turn upside down the life of the city, but just suddenly makes you freeze life for a while and think about something important, hearing an amazing melody.
A lonely man walked through the morning town with a music trumpet. Sometimes he played it, but nobody cared. And yet there were those who asked who he was. It turned out that he was the famous actor McGregor. There were those who fed and warmed the vagrant. He played the trumpet again in gratitude. Played so that all the townspeople, having left business, went out to listen to the magical sounds of his music. close

Inhabitants depicts animals in panic: the film is mostly filled with shots of mass migrations and stampedes (some, surprisingly, filmed from a helicopter). The title equalizes the species of the earth. Artavazd Peleshian merely alludes to the presence of human beings—a few silhouettes that seem to be the cause of these vast, anxious movements of animal fear. In many ways, this film is an ode to the animal world that moves toward formal abstraction, with clouds of silver birds pulverizing light. Peleshian said, “It’s hard to give a verbal synopsis of these films. Such films exist only on the screen, you have to see them.” close
