Since 1922, Gregory got a job in the theater workshop, where he painted the scenery for the performances. Then he moved to the Solovtsev Theater, and a little later, together with friends A. Kapler and S. Yutkevich, he created a puppet theater, and then the experimental theater "Harlekin", where he staged a play based on his own play.
After numerous productions in 1924, Grigory Kozintsev transferred experiments to cinema, transforming his theater workshop into FEX.
In the same year he began to work at the Lenfilm film studio, shot a short film with Trauberg.
