Victoria Samoilovna Tokareva was born in 1937 in the city of Leningrad. Already at the age of thirteen, she showed a love for literature, but she decided not to become a writer at once and therefore first tried to enter the medical faculty, but nothing came of it. Then she decided to get a musical education and studied for four years at the school, and then at the Leningrad Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory.
While working at a children’s music school in Moscow, she began writing prose. Then got to work as an editor in Mosfilm and in 1962 entered the script faculty in VGIK.
Victoria Tokareva writes about ordinary people with ordinary problems, so familiar to the reader. She was strongly influenced by the work of A.P. Chekhov, so critics often call her works “Chekhov’s”. The work of Victoria Tokareva may seem too “moral”, often the reader sees in it the relationship between the sexes, for this reason it is also called “feminist”, although in the West Tokareva is considered an “unfeminine” writer. Tokareva writes about real life and real people, but at the same time plunges into something fantastic, that’s what turns out in her works a plexus of mysticism and reality.
Victoria Tokareva also wrote 14 brilliant scripts in which famous Soviet directors made films that later became no less famous. So, the audience in 1976 was presented with the picture “One hundred grams for courage”, a year later – the picture “Before the exam”, in 1983 the film “Talisman” was released.
Three films based on the scripts of Victoria Tokareva know and love for many years the Soviet and Russian audience. These are movies like
Gentlemen of good luck .
Mimino scripts written in collaboration with George Danelia, and
"The dog walked on the piano" . The film “Mimino” in 1977 received an award at the Moscow International Film Festival and the State Prize in 1978.
Victoria Samoilovna Tokareva is a member of the Writers’ Union and today continues her work, and her works have been translated into English and German.
