Born on May 22, 1913 in St. Petersburg. In school he studied with the famous composer Alexander Glazunov. His first work (waltz) was written at the age of eight years. When he was fifteen, the Leningrad Theatre of Musical Comedy premiered his operetta “The Night Before Christmas”. In 1930 he entered the Leningrad Conservatory in the class of composition, which he graduated externally in 1934.
Since 1937 he worked in cinema. His first film was the film “Children of Captain Grant” directed by Vladimir Weinstock. From 1976 to 1980 he was a member of the board of the Union of Composers of the USSR, from 1981 to 1985 - a member of the board of the Union of Cinematographers of the USSR, since 1974 - Honorary President of the Association of Friends of France. He was awarded the Order of the Red Star (1946), the Red Banner of Labor (1971), the French Order “For Artistic Activity” (1978), the Bulgarian Order “Kirill and Methodius I degree” (1986), “For Services to the Fatherland of the IV degree” (1998), 17 military and civil medals. Honored Artist of the RSFSR (1968), People's Artist of the RSFSR (1978), People's Artist of the USSR (1983). He died on April 4, 2004. He was buried in Moscow at the Novodevichy cemetery.
