Born in Yaroslavl. He graduated from the Moscow Theatre of Revolution (1938) and the Gorky Literary Institute (1952). He worked as an actor and director in the theater, then took up dramaturgy. In the movie, he debuted as the author of the script of the film “Good Hour!”, and the picture of Mikhail Kalatozov “Cranes Are Flying” glorified him all over the world.
