At 17, he went to prison for murder. After serving time, the young man went there a second time. It was in prison that Dutton discovered his talents.
While serving his second term, Charles was placed in solitary confinement for six days. You could take one book with you, and the young man chose an anthology of plays. After serving in the prison cell, he asked the leadership to organize a dramatic circle. Dutton got a permit, but on the condition that he graduated from high school. After his release from prison, the young man went to study at Towson State University in Baltimore.
Charles began his journey to fame in 1984. His first Broadway appearance in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom brought him immense popularity. The work itself received the award “Theatrical world”. In 1990, his other work, The Piano Lesson, won the same award.
